Malta IAP releases traffic results for January 2017

The year is off to a flying start at Malta International Airport, with January having exceeded the 300,000 passenger mark for the first time. Hosting precisely 301,289 passengers in January, the airport's traffic for the month increased by 27.3% over 2016. This means that the airport welcomed 64,699 passengers more than it did in its first month last year.

This growth was registered on the back of an upturn in both aircraft movements and seat capacity, which grew by 22.1% and 27.7%, respectively. Enhanced connectivity to markets such as Germany, Spain and Italy was an important contributing factor to this growth. Moreover, seat load factor also increased by 1% to reach 72.7%, indicating that airlines were more efficient in filling up available seats, as more tourists chose to travel to Malta.

The United Kingdom, Italy and Germany were the top three contributors of traffic at Malta International Airport, with all three registering double-digit growth. Accounting for 15,784 and 13,903 passenger movements, Belgium and Spain, were the fourth and fifth top drivers of traffic to Malta during the month of January.

Looking at the top five airports delivering traffic to Malta, one notes that newcomer Catania Fontanarossa International Airport established itself at the top of the list, following the introduction of added flight frequencies to this airport.

The maximum take-off weight at the airport also experienced a 26.8% growth to reach 104,108 tonnes and the weight of cargo and mail climbed to 1,305 tonnes from the 1,185 tonnes registered in January 2016. (Source: maltairport.com, 7-Feb-2017)

Ryanair announces three new routes for Malta's winter schedule

Three new routes and more flights to a number of others will mean Ryanair will start delivering 2.2 million visitors to Malta every year.

The low-cost airline announced on Wednesday it would be introducing new routes to Belfast (Ireland), Naples (Italy) and Riga (Latvia) as from its winter 2017 schedule, while also adding more flights to Gdansk, Krakow, Stockholm Skavsta, Venice Treviso, Vilnius and Wroclaw. The new will routes raise the total number of routes linked to Malta via Ryanair to 40, with flights increasing to a total of 109 each week.

Ryanair’s Chief Commercial Officer D. O’Brien said that the new routes were further proof of the airline's continued commitment to Malta. O’Brien said the airline had also recorded record bookings on its Malta summer 2017 schedule, mainly due to more flights to destinations for summer family holidays, low fares and a better customer experience. Malta IAP placas third in the best airport by region (Europe) in 2016 ASQ Awards

Malta IAP has placed third in the Best Airport by Region (Europe) category in Airports Council International's 2016 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. Airports Council International (ACI) today announced the winners of its ASQ Awards, following the rating of 284 airports worldwide by passengers travelling through them during the course of 2016.

Malta IAP obtained its highest score to date in this survey, which measures passengers' overall satisfaction with their airport experience, including staff efficiency and courtesy, ease of way finding and airport facilities. This landed the airport in a prestigious third place from among eighty-four European peers welcoming over two million passengers annually. Sharing this spot with Malta IAP are Dublin (28 milllion pax/year), Porto (seven million pax/year) and Zurich (27 million pax/year) airports. (Source: maltairport.com, 6-Mar-2017)

Air Malta will start scheduled services between Malta and the Israeli city of Tel Aviv as from Apr. 21st. The Maltese airline will operate with up to three flights a week during summer 2017.

"We are thrilled that we can announce Tel Aviv as our new destination for this season. Air Malta considering reopening of Frankfurt route

Air Malta is currently reconsidering the possibility of reopening its Frankfurt route, tourism Minister K. Mizzi has confirmed. Mizzi was responding to a supplementary parliamentary question put to him by shadow tourism minister R. Arrigo, this morning.

According to the minister, Air Malta's marketing team was currently evaluating the possibility of opening a number of new routes, as well as others which might have been closed in the past.

He stressed however, that if Air Malta were to reopen its Frankfurt route, this would have to come with a holistic plan and long-term. "It would have to be done well and would not result in Air Malta returning for one season," said the minister. (Source: maltatoday.com, 30-Jun-2017)

Air Malta to restart Malta-Manchester route next year

Air Malta will be restarting flights to Manchester on a weekly basis as of May 2018 after the service was axed earlier this year. The airline announced last December that the popular route would be scrapped from May 2017 to focus on other, more profitable services.

The decision was met with widespread criticism, but Air Malta said it had been projected to lose up to €2 million in variable costs by operating the route with four flights per week this summer, and that the “expensive” route should have been axed “many years ago”.

But industry sources told this newspaper Air Malta had now secured a commitment, as of May next year, for a significant portion of seats to be taken up by tour operators on the Manchester route, making the route viable. (Source: timesofmalta.com, 18-Aug-2017)

Air Malta to fly to Comiso, third airport in Sicily

Air Malta will start operating a twice weekly evening scheduled service to Sicily’s Comiso airport, on Fridays and Sundays, from December 17.
The airline said its Go-Light fares will apply on the route making it possible to fly for €39 per way including taxes and charges.
In summer the Maltese airline restarted scheduled services to Palermo. It also flies to Catania.
Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said Air Malta's growth strategy was gaining momentum.
"Air Malta will be strengthening its operations in Sicily with a view to better serve
Sicilian tourists and business passengers who can connect to other destinations via Malta,” he said.

The flights will go on sale on Monday.

M.I.A. plc releases trafffic results for September 2017

Traffic at Malta IAP in September registered an increase of more than 89,000 passenger movements over the same month last year, with a total of 626,488 guests welcomed at MIA.

This translated into an increase of 16.7% over 2016. Moreover, September was the third consecutive month at the airport to surpass the 600,000 mark in terms of passenger numbers.

Standing at 86.7%, September’s seat load factor (SLF) remained constant, in spite of the increase in both aircraft movements (14.6%) and seat capacity (17.0%).

The United Kingdom continued to lead Malta IAP's list of top markets, contributing 146,160 passenger movements to September's total traffic, and growing by 4.7% over last year mainly due to an increase in capacity as a result of the Cruise & Fly operation.

On the other hand, the rest of the top markets, these being Italy (10.5%), Germany (25.8%) and France (17.6%) all registered double-digit growth. Spain, which is the fifth largest market, is maintaining its year-to-date progress, with a hefty 43.8% increase in passenger movements in September, partly stemming from increased flight frequencies to Madrid. Air Malta launches its winter schedule

Quote:
Air Malta's winter schedule which came into operation today is one of the busiest for this period of the year in recent years.

The country's national airline said that between now and the end of March the airline company will be operating more than 110 flights a week to 22 destinations, which is four times as much as last year’s operations. This increase will mean an additional 146,000 passengers added to the winter schedule.

Flights to Frankfurt in Germany have been resumed as from today, a destination that had been dropped last year, and flights to Comiso have also been added. Two daily flights will be operated to Catania and Heathrow, London, and there will be daily flights to Brussels, Rome, Gatwick, Munich and Vienna.

Tourism Minister Dr K. Mizzi said that to meet this ambitious schedule the airline will be increasing its operational hours by almost 30%. Mizzi said the increase in routes as well as frequency throughout the winter will support the Government's efforts to decrease the seasonal trend in tourist arrivals.
