Attendance records

By that I mean within an enclosed stadium rather than trackside events(horse racing, motorsport etc). The 1950 WC final at the Maracana with just under 200,000 springs to mind as does the 1923 "white horse" FA cup final with rumours putting the attendance as high as 250,000.

What about the F1? It probably has a bigger crowd!

I know the Scotland v England match in 1937 at Hampden Park attracted the official number of 149,415 spectators. Sources do say that there were more, considering there were a lot of people in the stadium without tickets.

Maracana stadium had a record attendance of 199,854 during the Brazil vs. Uruguay match in the World Cup Final of 1950. Nowadays it's only a 70000 all-seater.

Which is remarkable, considering most older stadiums that become all-seaters usually loose about 1/3rd - 1/4th of the capacity while Maracana lost about 2/3.

I'd guess that depends on how much seating they had in the first place, most english football grounds already had alot of seating prior to the taylor report. Look futher back and you a the difference though as for example my club's(Crystal Palace) record attenance at their current ground(Selhurst Park) was over 50,000 in the 1950's yet as an all seater ground it only holds a maxium of 26,000 even with a redevolped end thats far larger than the original stand.

Actually to be specific, the crowd in the Maracana was 199 854.

Just some extra info: The largest stadium in the world is Rungnado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, and it has a capacity of 150,000.

And about F1 circuits, they're actually included in the world stadiums website.

I seem to recall a cricket match in India pulled in something outrageous like 950,000 over 5 days.

The shite horse final was massive mainly because I think it was the first final to be played at Wembley, it got fans from every team coming to watch it.

The pictures of it are truly memorable ...

The first ever event to be held in the stadium was the FA Cup Final on the 28th April 1923 between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United, which became famous as 'the white horse cup final'.

The crowds swarmed onto the pitch prior to kick off and the match would have been abandoned if not for the heroic actions of PC George Scorey and his white horse Billy. Who controlled the crowd of 250,000, allowing the game to be kicked off and the eventual 2-0 victory by Bolton.

a stand along an F1 track is not a stadium
a stadium consists of stands that encircle a pitch

On the 29th of April 1995, 190,000 attended the 2nd day of a 2 day Pro Wrestling event at the May Day Stadium headlined by the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. The 1st day on April 28 attracted 'only' 150,000. These are the 2 largest pro wrestling crowds in history

The world record is more than 300 000 people in Circus Maximus (Rome) a few years before JC.

Cricket

India v Pakistan , 1999, Kolkata drew 400,000. Test match record in Asia.

Considering the MCG holds 100,000 surely an Ashes test im Melbourne could beat that. Please, no Australian jokes about 3 day games in The Ashes.

It isn't a "stadium," but the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts the two largest sporting events in the World each year...the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. Both of which draw in excess of 450,000 people.
