The capacity between 1951 and 1955 was 97,500.

Is this exactly enough? Probably a match in this time was sold out.

It wasn't an attendance, it was a pitch invasion. Nothing more, nothing less.
"But the counted attendance was 126,047 plus people who forced their way through the turnstiles without paying " I hear you reply....
Well...for your information, at Scotlands 1937 game with England , the official attendance was 149,547, however a turnstyle on the mount florida end was rushed, and an estimated 20- 30,000 made it into the game for free. It was the same story one week before when the Scottish Cup Final drew a crowd of 146,433 for Celtic v. Aberdeen ( still a European record for a club match ).. and another turnstyle was burst open.
It was these two games that forced the introduction of tickets in Scotland.
But the difference between these games and wembley 1926 was, the crowd all stayed in the stands, and not all over the pitch.

Until the Maracana Stadium was built in Brazil, Hampden Park was the world's largest Football stadium, once measured to hold 184,000..(although I'm glad it never,,,it would have been a deathtrap )

Ah: the voice of reason.

Have to disagree with the last comment though Celt67. Hampden was registered to hold a tad over 184,000 if the aisles were used. From talking to someone at the 1937 Scottish Cup Final and studying the Queens Park FC archives (owners of Hampden) I am certain beyond reasonable doubt that Hampden achieved a 180,000+ crowd for that game.

Don't forget that for about 300 metres of its perimeter Hampden had a reasonably low wall. The police did not stop people climbing over because it was not their issue. Junior Omand who played for QPFC in the 50s said he saw hundreds of Celtic fans coming over the wall at the corner of the North Stand and Celtic End at a semi final in the early 60s because they had made a staircase out of wooden beer crates liberated from a local pub.

The turnstile men were also scamming the public with some nifty tricks until the stiles became linked to computers in the mid 80s.

The Wembley figure does not bear scrutiny. I'd like to know where the 75,000 extra fans stood. Hampden did not exceed capacity until it had 50,000 more spectators than Wembley. Quite what anyone saw at the back of the Celtic End though...

Madison Square is a block with a park. It doesn't have anything to do with the arena's shape, just location.

From wiki:

Quote:
Madison Square Garden derives its name from the park where the first two gardens were located (Madison Square) on Madison Avenue at 26th Street. As the venue moved to new locations the name still stuck, although since 1925 Madison Square Garden has been neither a garden nor on Madison Square.
and the rest of the goofy story:

Quote:
The location of the first Madison Square Garden (now known as Madison Square Garden I), was at 26th Street and Madison Avenue. The site was formerly occupied by the passenger depot of the New York and Harlem Railroad. When the depot was moved to what is now the site of Grand Central Terminal in 1871, the old depot was sold to P.T. Barnum who converted it into "Barnum's Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome." In 1876 Barnum's was converted into "Gilmore's Garden," an open air arena named in honor of Patrick Gilmore.[1] Gilmore was America's most well-known bandmaster at the time. His most famous composition was "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

Finally, Gilmore's Garden was renamed "Madison Square Garden" by William Henry Vanderbilt and the facility was reopened to the public on May 31, 1879. The first Garden was originally designed for the sport of track cycling. This is still remembered in the name of the Madison event.
This carried over the other "garden arena," The Boston Garden.

Quote:
The Boston Garden was a famous arena built in 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by boxing promoter Tex Rickard, who also built the third incarnation of New York's Madison Square Garden, the arena was originally called the "Boston Madison Square Garden", but eventually got clipped to the Boston Garden.

It has become quite an interesting and impressive list. Hope some more forum members of still missing countries will provide their numbers.

@Sercan: this thread was a very good idea. Too bad the Netherlands are not higher ranked, but the Feyenoord Stadium "De Kuip" always had a large number of seats, even from the opening in March 1937 on, the vast majority of the capacity was made up of seats (well wooden benches actually ). I think many numbers posted in this tread are for stadiums where at the time the majority of the spectators were standing.

But the Feyenoord Stadium was very, very modern and progressive for its time. Many stadiums caught up dozens of years later! And enough stadiums around Europe or the rest of the world still are not at its level, even when finally plans and actions are unfolding in Rotterdam to build a successor! But practically all the newer large stadiums that were built the last 20 years or so, especially in Europe since I know the football stadiums there quite well, are now better equipped facilities. Even though, when UEFA started ranking stadiums in star categories, the stadium managed to score the 5 star maximum!

The largest crowd in South Africa was 100,000 for South Africa v British Isles at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, in 1955, and the largest crowd in New Zealand will also have been for a rugby match, at Eden Park, Auckland, but I can't find the record anywhere...

That's correct. The largest crowd for football at Ullevi is 52.194 (IFK Göteborg - Örgytes IS 03.06.1959). Slightly less than Rĺsunda.
