LOS ANGELES | Olympic Tower | 226m | 740ft | 57 fl | Pro

First Look at the 60-Story DTLA Car Wash Killer

Quote:
January 07, 2016

The website of Monrovia-based architecture firm Nardi Associates may offer a first glimpse of the next addition to the Downtown Los Angeles skyline.

Renderings for a project called "Olympic Tower," appear to portray the highly anticipated mixed-use development slated for the current home of the Downtown Car Wash at Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street.

Plans filed last month with the City of Los Angeles indicate that the project would consist of a high-rise structure featuring 374 residential units, a 373-key hotel, approximately 33,500 square feet of commercial office space, a 10,800-square-foot conference center and over 65,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

The tower, which would rise an imposing 60 stories, is described by the Nardi Associates website as "a gigantic urban tree," with real vegetation meshing with LED signage and digital images of landscape.

The building's exterior would include a structural grid pattern, with facade patterns consistent with those of the adjacent Figueroa Hotel on its lower levels.

The hotel component, highlighted by two open atriums, would begin with a 14th-floor lobby and amenity deck.

[...]
*Height is an estimate, in all likelihood this will be a skyscraper.

Mixed-Use Tower Slated to Replace Los Angeles Car Wash
Quote:
A sure sign that Los Angeles is urbanizing and slowly but surely shedding its auto-centric image, a car wash at the corner of Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street is slated for major intensification. Neman Real Estate Investments has appointed architect Nardi Associates to design the Olympic Tower, which is seeking a height of 57 storeys and 226 metres, and if approved, would become one of the city's tallest buildings.

To me it looks like something a county flush with cash would build for it's local jail, but I suppose it's better than a boring glass box

This is a horrible looking building. These "architects" that propose these giant shit-stacks just for the sake of designing something different or "edgy" should have their licenses revoked.

LA needs a whacky tower. Most towers on the skyline are architecturally conservative.

Sure, but that doesnt mean that such a building should be ugly as hell, as this proposed design is. Being different simply for the sake of difference is a recipe for disaster.

This isn't whacky, just a big architectural mess that will age horribly. I think I'll take LA's "conservative" style over this obscenity any day.

...Honestly, this reaction seems way overboard. Yes, the missing glass sections aren't exactly suave, but if it's really so terrible in reality, it'll be a relatively easy thing to change. The fundamental shape is a slightly-bent rectangle--it'll blend right in from the distances most people will see it.

I'm hoping for a design change as well, before this gets approved for construction, because once you complete a new building over 200 meters, there's no turning back.

Plus, I wonder if this is just a placeholder design. Frank Gehry's building designs look better than this junk.
