NEW YORK | Ferries and Water Taxis

New York City operates an abundance of ferry and water taxi services, concentrated mostly on Midtown and Lower Manhattan, with connections to New Jersey, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens. Perhaps the most popular, in my opinion, would be the Staten Island Ferry service: operated by the New York City MTA, it does the crossing between Whitehall in Manhattan and St. George's in Staten Island in 25 minutes, and it is a free service that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Beyond New York City, New York Waterways also operates ferry services along the Hudson River between Ossining, NY and Haverstraw, NJ, and between Beacon, NY and Newburgh, NJ.

Why would the city even consider an outside agency?

There should be selected ferry service in NYC, e.g. to Staten Island and across East River and Hudson River, but the demand is not high enough to justify large scale river ferry crossing, especially when many cities are reducing their ferry services due to lack of ridership.

What do you mean by "selected"? Express?

Carefully planned, adequate but not excessive.

This is a "public-private partnership". It decreases the original capital costs involved in building new ferries and terminals while still providing good service. They just have to ensure that the private operators run frequently enough, especially off-peak, and that they don't cut corners enough to threaten safety.

New ferry route between N.J. and midtown to begin this fall

NYC’s Citywide ferry service officially sets sail today!

Quote:
The much-anticipated NYC Ferry service begins today, lessening the commute to Manhattan for many outer borough residents. The first commuter ferry took off from the new Rockaway route at 5:30 a.m. Monday, picked up more passengers at Sunset Park and then arrived in Lower Manhattan in just about one hour. Newly renovated ferries will also launch today on the East River Route, which services Midtown and Financial District communities. On Sunday, Mayor de Blasio held a christening ceremony and took the first ferry ride from the Rockaways to Wall Street...

...In total, there will be 21 stops added as a part of the city’s initiative to expand ferry service to all boroughs. The Far Rockaway route takes passengers from Beach 108th Street to Wall Street’s Pier 11 in just under an hour...

..The city says the ferry, which costs $2.75 per ride, will make about 4.6 million trips per year across the six routes.

...aside from the free Wi-Fi and charging stations, you can also partake in some afternoon (or whenever you prefer) drinking. The ferry will offer beer on tap, wine, and coffee, along with a selection of snacks, all part of a concessions stand called The New Stand. The ferry will offer Brooklyn Pilsner and the Gotham Project on tap, and Joe Coffee will be the pick-me-up of choice.

The Ferry Services to Wall Street can hopefully accelerate the renaissance of the Financial District.

Can New York Get Ferry Skeptics on Board?
Critics say commuters won’t switch; ‘They’re spending money in the wrong places’

They should charge premium fare for premium service.
