YANGON | Public Transport

This thread will be discussing public transportation in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma)

===

This is quite interesting

Yangon launches light rail line

Quote:
MYANMAR: The first phase of a light rail line in Yangon was officially opened with a ceremony on January 10.

The 48 km east-west route from Linsadaung to Wardan Jetty uses a newly electrified on-street freight railway running along Strand Road, and a three-section ex-Hiroshima tram with capacity for 180 passengers. Myanma Railways operates six services per day in each direction between 08.00 and 16.00 and charges a fare of 100 kyat.

Funding for the project has come from the Ministry of Rail Transportation and West Japan Railway, which signed a US$3m investment agreement in July 2015. The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism and Japan International Co-operation Agency have provided technical assistance and training.

Extensions from Wardan to Kyeemyindaing and from Linsadaung to Pazundaung would bring the route to 113 km and are due to be completed this year.

These would allow interchanges at both ends with the 46 km Yangon Circular Railway, which is to be upgraded with the help of a US$250m soft loan from Japan. The upgrades would include refurbishment of the 38 stations on the route, new rolling stock, and signalling and track upgrades.

Yangon to see electric commuter tramcar line on Strand Road

Quote:
WITH the launching of a tram rail over a four-mile distance on the Strand Road, Myanmar Railways has taken a step to connecting the tram rail line with the current circular rail service.
Myanmar Railways announced yesterday that it will launch tram rail on the Strand Road route from War Dan to Linsadaung on 10 January.
With a seating capacity of 150, the tram rail will run 10 times a day from 7 a.m to 4p.m with a 100 kyat fare for each commuter.
The tram rail line will be 7 miles long in total with three phases but only 4 miles will be launched initially.
The move is aimed at easing traffic congestion and to provide commuters with convenient public transportation, said U Kyaw Soe Lin, Manger of Myanmar Railways.
Myanmar Railways and the Japanese West Corporation signed a 3 million USD deal for this tram rail project in July last year.
MR had the train on trial runs on 7 and 8 January.
The tram rail services will be the first in Myanmar since the same kind of transportation was launched in 1904.
The current railroad along the Strand Road serves mainly as a transit route for cargo to move goods from Yangon’s ports.
Myanmar Railways began operating a commuter train along the rail in an attempt to curb congestion however the line is unlikely to dramatically reduce traffic.—Soe Win SP

Are there any plans to implement a modern rail-based transit system in Yangon? I was there last July and the traffic is very bad, almost like Bangkok before the Skytrain. I thought I read that a Japanese consultancy was hired to plan something.

It's rather very poor service. The speed is also ridiculous. It all looks to me more like a 'toy' than a real transportation.

Myanma Railways still heavily relies on diesel engine throughout the country, with this tram line electrification I'd really hope that the service would actually improving, especially since JICA will also fund the electrification of Yangon Circular Railway

=====

Before the electrification the Strand Road line used to be served by RBE (Rail Bus Engine) trains. I don't know for sure whether the electric tram had fully replaced this RBE yet along the line

A cab view of the RBE train. I guess the current electric tram line starts at 17:40

Set aside from trams, Yangon city buses are mainly consists of second-hand modified LHD Japanese city buses and South Korean city buses
