London Waterloo Station | London, UK

London Waterloo Station

The largest station in London and the UK by area covered: 24.5acres.Technically the station is part of a much larger transportation interchange, with the Waterloo London Underground platforms beneath the station, the Waterloo East station which serves trains from Kent and Southwark Jubilee line tube station, which like Waterloo, has a Jubilee line station. The station is served by the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and the Waterloo & City London Underground lines.

The original station opened on July 11, 1848, but the current structure dates from 1900 and was built entirely from Portland Stone in the Imperial Baroque style. The roof shed is different from normal sheds, in that it is of transverse ridge and furrow design, resembling a large greenhouse and measures 540ft by 540ft. The roof was designed by J.W. Jacomb-Hood and A.W. Szlumper and the maximum span is 118ft.

A notable feature at Waterloo is the Victory Arch, which is dedicated to the loss of London South West Railway servicemen during WW1.
The station, like many of the other London Train Termini, had undergone modernisation in the late 80's and this has been continued with the advent of plasma screens replacing the old Solari board (which is still around as a sort of artifact of the station) to keep apace with modern demands (currently 110mppa use the station). There are 4 large train timetables now present on the concourse, each comprised of 22 plasma screens. On top of that, each platform entrance has a plasma screen displaying the destinations of the train currently at the platform.

Currently there are 19 platforms that serve commuter trains and 4 platforms in the adjacent Waterloo International partion of the station that serve the 400m long Eurostar trainsets.

The following are pictures taken by myself.

Note: you can see the top of one of the Eurostar trains to the top of the image

I forgot to add - the actual name of the station derives from the Battle of Waterloo (a town in Belgium) where on the 15th June 1815, the Duke of Wellington decisively defeated Napoleon Bonaparte, which marked the end of France's hostile adventures across Continental Europe. Ironically if your coming from Paris via the Channel Tunnel on Eurostar, your journey ends at London Waterloo International

Better than Liv st, not as good as St. Pancras 8/10.

If we're having a station theme on ROA I might take some pictures of B'ham New St. tomorrow

It's stunning ... huge, bright and airy. Quite futuristic too.

I prefer St Pancras, however.

The platforms in the foreground are those of Waterloo International for the 400m long passenger trainsets. In the background are the platforms for suburban, commuter and regional trains into London Waterloo Station.
