That would work fine as long as there was no wind.

The cables are there for a reason. Without them, the tower couldn't be a needle.

I also feel that the cables give it some personality. something to recognize it by. Also by night, if they do the illuminations like they show in some renders, it would be something rather remarkable to contemplate.

I reckon they'll put LEDs on the cables and go for Canton Tower-style lighting displays with moving colour patterns and somesuch.

I wish the race for pointless iconic supertall skyscrapers in the region would slow down. But instead, invest in large-scale sustainable developments. Masdar City & Dubai Sustainable City alone are not enough. Surely they set a great example for future of UAE. However for now they seem nothing more than just lucrative business opportunities for investors to benefit from a first mover advantage. The whole region will be left behind compared to other developed countries around the world if the UAE does not stress in its long-term future plans.

I also want to add that unlike the twins, this is at least a worthy replacement for the Dubai Towers. I still want those built, maybe in a little cluster with Nakheel Tower, One Dubai and Burj Al Alam. (Okay that wouldn't exactly be a "little" cluster...)

the actual constructiion site is next to the wetland shown in the photo. The wetland will remain as it is a protected area.

I wonder what the weight of all that cabling will be. That is a massive amount of cables at a very long length. And then there is the wind load.

Feel sorry for the engineer who has to make the drawings a reality.

It is a nice idea but not very essential. Calatrava's designs are very costly to build and extremely costly to maintain. When will the same effort go to things that are really needed?

Me too
There's wordwide no comparable structure so this one is newland. This will be an engeneering masterpiece without no doubt. I can't remember a project in which i was so excitet to witness how exactly they will build it.

There are a number of cable stayed towers, just with less cables. Suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges (Calatrava's specialty) use similar cables. They don't actually weight that much, and the structure might actually cost less than a conventional observation tower. It takes a lot of extra materials to counteract the wind loads.

No, towerpower is right, the principle is the same as a suspension bridge. Except it's a vertical bridge - to the sky.

This is the current tallest cable stayed tower, the KVLY-TV Mast. It measures 629m. This thing isn't comparable to the iconic tower. It has no floors, no elevators and nothing in common except the fact that additional cables support it. To build such a tower you open the drawer and get a approved tried and testet plan how to do it. Nothing special on it.

Yes, but those are far lower, with less cables. The big towers have maybe a dozen or two cables. This will have several hundred maybe.
Anyone count them yet?
