Dubai's economic growth is financed by love. I love it.

Wow! such a random article! Let me help you here ... They are talking about all Emirates as one! Majority of Oil comes from Abu Dhabi. If you do a little bit more research you will find that all Emirates economy is dependent on oil EXCEPT Dubai. And this is why Dubai is flourishing and booming again now while all other emirates are in distress.

In regards to Droneriot, exactly the emirate's economy and Dubai's economy in particular is not based on oil money on revenue from oil but from much more white collar investments particularly in the real -estate sector. In 2008 the real estate market crashed, highly affecting Dubai, oil's prices were actually on the rise proving that Dubai's reliability on oil is a hoax.

So what? Even if Dubai had a quadrillion barrels of oil, it wouldn't help as long as it's not pumped up. Oil is a part of the economy that's impossible to deny, but it's only 5%! The city is not dependent on it anymore.
Oil was just the tool to start the economic engine. Now, a different fuel keeps it running.

There is still a lot of good opportunity to borrow money/USD at cheap interest rates while it lasts until the Fed raises the rates. Change your mind set of how much the tower will cost, and try to imagine how much money the surrounding real estate will make Emaar once it's all complete.

I'm starting to like this tower more, and more. It just grows on you, and let's not forget the mind staggering height which will aw any one if they manage to complete it.

Wow thats an amazing design, it looks so stylish and refined. Are those light cables part of the structure? It seems like that, but at those lenghts those cables might weight a lot.

If designed wisely, with the new aluminum-steel alloys, it will weigh just around 300kg per 100m, for 1" thick guy wire. Such new alloys offer a comparable to titanium alloys strength-to-weight ratio.
I don't think they can afford any titanium alloys with these difficult market conditions, but I doubt they will come up with the idea to use this new Aluminum-Steel alloy technology with the reduced B2 crystalline structures either (it's only under 1 year old).

The most we'll probably see are refinements to the top of the structure, and maybe the base column as to what kind of cladding it will have. The amenity spaces however, are already pretty thoroughly modeled from the looks of it. We could see more close up plaza designs, though. Doubt they'll change the concept at this point at all.

I think they'll change a lot concerning the plaza design. The heat and sun simply doesn't allow a 500m wide plaza without any shadow or buildings.

Yapp, some calatrava-style winged pergolas would suit this plaza quite allright (if nothing better ever comes to their minds). That's my 2-second-worth free solution to the problem. Enjoy, Emaar.

No, but when developers design something far from perfect, I can admit that. In fact, I admire one of their buildings: BK has a good, valid design (for an office building, and as a business hotel). The absence of balconies and opening windows makes it a less than mediocre residential design though.
