I 100% agree but I never knew that we can't build that tall unless its a buttressed core??! So Nakheel Tower wasn't different no? when they started working on foundations, it was intended to be buttressed as well?

I agree with DubaiM. In addition to that, they have said from the beginning that they want something with same concept of the Eiffel Tower. But more glorious! and i think Dubai can do it!

Yes, but the tower would require a massive diameter and I guess that it wouldn't be a quite sustainable and efficient design. Due to the mass of the tower, it would end up expensive as well (ok to be fair, we don't know how expensive 'The Tower' is going to end up with Calatrava as the main architect )I guess, in combination with Emaar's intention to focus on the tourist attractions, they finally chose the hybrid design.

Y-shaped towers are very practical because of the improved interiors insolation. Look at the Las Vegas hotels: many of them are like that.

However, Taipei 101 has almost the same gross floor area as JT on the lower levels - around 3,000 m². But it's not practical for residential usage, because the areas closer to the core are too dark without an artificial lighting.

But of course, if they fill the space in-between the Y-wings, it will create an immense additional amount of units. It will take much longer time to build and it will be more difficult to maintain. Plus, religious concerns: there cannot be X-shapes because the cross is from christianity.

That would be the dumbest reason I've ever heard.
Also, not all Y shaped towers are copies of each other. Just like say twisting towers which are all different.

You're amazingly right here! And now you've got a proof: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...#post136035711
(I skipped the allegation part, assuming Tim was born at the Meyrin campus and remains there till now)

The best solution for Jeddah Tower to stop the work and watch Dubai new tower until it finished .Then make some modifications to the spire to make it longer and finally beat the bastard new Dubai tower.

Here's a question I've wondered, as I'm sure others have at times.

So I understand that Emaar has a huge portfolio and history as a real estate developer for residential and other properties. Granted they've sunk so much money on the whole Burj Khalifa block (mall / Old Town / Addresses / BK / ancillary buildings / new HQ) but is there any word as to if they've made back the money spent?

Of course usually the WTB scale buildings aren't money makers by themselves these days - it's the whole property value rise / influx of traffic etc., to make the whole development successful, but do you think Emaar has made it's money back on the development by now? Clearly they're spending billions more to make The Tower and environment so do they just have that much money, or are they already profiting on everything else?

Just curious.

i don't know how the rest of the developments of Emaar surrounding Burj Khalifa worked for Emaar, but believe me, Dubai Mall is a huge money maker, from the annual report of 2014 of Emaar:

Quote:
The Dubai Mall

Surpassing annual footfall figures achieved by the world’s most popular tourist destinations and key international airports, The Dubai Mall continued its premier position as the ‘world’s most-visited lifestyle destination’welcoming over 80 million visitors in 2014.
The contribution of The Dubai Mall to the city’s retail sector is significant,
and is estimated to account for about 5 percent of Dubai’s GDP. Tenant
sales recorded across the mall’s 1,200 plus retail stores and 200 F&B outlets
at the mall, cumulatively grew by 14 percent in 2014, with growth seen
across categories including fashion, luxury jewellery, footwear, sports and
recreation, health and beauty, entertainment and food. The Dubai mall
accounts for nearly 50 percent of all luxury good purchases in the emirate
Most probably if they sold the property they could make not one additional or two, probably they would receive money for four of them.

What KT needs to do is stick to what they started, and finish this massive building project, and stop being side tracked with what Dubai is doing, and what Dubai will further do.

Nothing on Earth will help KT being higher than the Dubai Tower which has endless opportunities.

It is a non-freestanding structure, nothing is comparable with JT but the height

No need to mix things (structures are different not the same as fully occupied buildings)

But, I really hope this one will be at least 1200 m high, with a height like this it would be very unique but, sadly not officially a building

Remember the times when CN Tower was the tallest towerand people still were hyped for the tallest building being built? It should apply now as well. Tallest building is anazing and tallest structure is as amazing. Let's just be happy we live in a time where we can see two structures of such massive proportions be built at the same time.

Wait what are you talking about? So the roof height in this tower is 1014m? Excluding the spire?!?! and and 54F?!?!? This ain't a tower nor a building nor a mast nor a freestanding structure ... I'm sorry this building is so unique will never be labeled. I'm so excited for this one.

Observation deck at 1000m+
