Amtrak is seeking to add another Bakersfield-Oakland round trip by 2016.06.06. That will make it 7 round trips in total.

Greyhound is moving its bus terminal to Diridon railway station in San Jose in late May 2016. This will consolidate all intercity rail and bus services at Diridon (Amtrak, Caltrain, ACE, Megabus and Boltbus already serve Diridon).

Caltrain nets further electrification funding
Monday, May 09, 2016

CALTRAIN's Modernisation Program has secured an additional $US 211m investment following a seven-party agreement adopted by the agency's board of directors on May 5

The agreement increases commitments in funding from Caltrain's state and local partners, including the California High-Speed Rail Authority, which will invest a further $US 113m into the modernisation programme

This has been delayed, according to Modesto Bee

Quote:
The authority is close to announcing a seventh daily round trip and is in the planning stage for an eighth. It also envisions starting some trains from midroute locations, such as Merced or Fresno, so residents can reach Oakland and Sacramento early in the day.

Is the increased demand for the additional trains in the Central Valley to accommodate daily commuters?

No, the Capitol Corridor sees many commuters. The San Joaquin is used more for infrequent trips. IE: Visiting family, attending an event, sightseeing etc. Thats why 6 trains are spread out from 4am to 10pm.

Here is the press release from Greyhound (belated post on my part):

https://www.greyhound.com/en/media/2016/5-31-2016

Unlike what happened in Edmonton, having the intercity rail and bus stations in the same place in San Jose, CA actually makes sense.

From Railway Gazette:

Caltrain signs double-deck EMU and electrification contracts
16 Aug 2016

USA: On August 15 the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board formally signed contracts for Balfour Beatty to electrify the 82 km Caltrain rail corridor between San Francisco and San Jose and for Stadler to supply a fleet of double-deck electric multiple-units.

Stadler is to supply 16 six-car EMUs under its $551m contract, and there is an option for a further 96 cars worth $385m. Stadler said its seventh and by far the biggest US order means its KISS family of double-deck trainsets would be used in nine different countries. The 157·1 m long units will have a maximum speed of 177 km/h, and can be extended to seven or eight cars if required. The first EMU is scheduled to be handed over for testing in August 2019 and enter service in 2020

So, they're going to have doors at two different heights?

Yes.

Right now all of the platforms on the corridor are low-level. The plan is to eventually move them up to be high-level. That's when the high doors will come into play. Once all of the platforms are high-level, then the low-level doors will be removed for more seating.

Don't you think the name "Caltrain" is somewhat misleading? It implies some sort of statewide rail network. Instead it is a single commuter line running up & down the SF peninsula.

When they first launched the brand, it was the only rail operation going through the California Department of Transportation, which is known as Caltrans.
