EL PASO-CIUDAD JUÁREZ | Public Transport

El Paso is a major city in western Texas with a population of about 680,000. The city is known for having a large military presence, for the University of Texas at El Paso and for being right across the Rio Grande from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

Ciudad Juárez has nearly twice as many people as El Paso. It is the largest city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua and amongst the largest in Mexico. The city is a major manufacturing hub, especially electronics and medical devices.

El Paso's public transport operator (Sun Metro) is building a rapid bus system called "Brio." One line, Mesa, opened in 2014. "Brio" is characterized by:
  • uniquely branded 60-foot articulated buses in mixed traffic
  • a frequency of 10 minutes (peak service) to 15 minutes (off-peak service)
  • stations that are about a mile apart
  • branded and landscaped stations with improved pedestrian amenities
  • signal prioritization (lengthen green traffic signals).

Here is a map of the Mesa corridor:

http://www.sunmetro.net/brio.html

Here are some facts about the Mesa corridor from Sun Metro's website:
  • Length: about 8.6 miles
  • Beginning of route: Downtown Transfer Center
  • End of route: Westside Transfer Center
  • Total number of buses: 10
  • Number of stations: 22
  • Total project cost: $27.1 million
  • FTA funding: $13.5 million
  • TXDOT funding: $6.1 million
  • Operational: fall 2014

Three more Brio corridors are scheduled to open over the next three years. Two of those corridors will serve the Downtown Transfer Center.

A streetcar is also under construction in El Paso. Vehicles will be restored streetcars that will resemble the El Paso streetcar from the early 1900s. This will be a two-mile, double-tracked corridor, beginning in the area near the Downtown Shopping District and International Bridges, traveling north through downtown to the University of Texas at El Paso area, the Cincinnati Entertainment District and back.

Here is a map showing construction timelines:

The historic streetcars are being restored in Pennsylvania.

Across the river, Ciudad Juárez has a 25-km BRT line that opened in November 2013. It is called ViveBús.
