Looks like I should've commented on this some time back...

This is a need given the expansion of SWISS in the airport, where it has increased its served destinations from 12 to 30 in just 2 years. Its primary goal is to keep competing against EZY
If SWISS is to reopen its GVA base, then will the airport see long-haul flight resumptions too? I mean, I recall LX operating flight between Geneva and New York on board the A330... yet, with the airline planning to reestablish itself in southwestern Switzerland, how many of its A330s and A340s will be reassigned to GVA, if not share duties between Geneva and Zurich? And, how many long-haul destinations will LX launch in the process once it is established?

The Lufthansa Group announced plans to further develop regional, low-cost and "private" but "price-sensitive" long-haul operations as part of a "Wings"-branded family.

As I've noticed, some aviation enthusiasts seem to be a bit confused about Lufthansa's long haul plans, totally mixing things up. So here to clear things up: since LH does not own Condor anymore, which would be perfect for this (and in fact is pretty successfull in this market), LH has plans to grow on tourist-heavy long-haul routes by utilising a new LCC as well as mainline flights. There are 2 projects existing for this:

Wings/Interkont - brand name possibly "Worldwings", is a new budget long haul LCC to be operated under the Wings concept (Germanwings + Eurowings already belong to this), starting with 3 and using up to 7 still to be purchased A330s. Most probably to be based in Cologne, Dusseldorf and/or Munich initially and operating low-cost long-haul flights from Germany (future plans could also include Belgium, Switzerland and Austria) to typical leisure destinations. Still in evaluation if LH will build it on their own, or using the SunExpress platform in cooperation with Turkish Airlines (both airlines own 50% of SunExpress).

Jump - this is not a brand, but just an internal project name for keeping and restarting LH mainline flights on routes with low premium demand which in the past had to be cut, are currently in danger of being cut or have not been high yielding enough to even be started at all. Customer won't notice any difference to normal Lufthansa flights, just the internal cost base will be lower: it's planned to initially use 8, later up to 14 of LH's 19 A340-300s (these are completely written off and originally planned to be phased out by the end of this decade) with a less premium heavy configuration of -/18/19/261 (as opposed to the standard A343 configuration which will be -/42/28/181 and -/30/28/221 in the future). For these flights, LH's already reached an agreement with the flight attendants union. For the pilots it will depend on the results of the current pay dispute (if they don't reach an agreement capable for the jump project also, LH could also lease external pilots from PrivatAir for this). All routes will start from Frankfurt. Destinations already mentioned in this context are existing ones such as Chennai, Quingdao and Bangkok, formerly axed ones like Hyderabad and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as completely new ones like Tampa, Las Vegas, Seychelles.

I hope that Jump could consider operating to Manila as well, a route that Lufthansa axed years back due to concerns found in the Philippines (now that two dreaded airline taxes have been removed and that the economy is growing again). And by the way, could you provide a link to that interesting news development since I would like to see that airline be developed full-time? And will that revitalized airline also use any of the B744s currently in operation too with LH mainline?

From today, you can also discuss the following carriers in this thread:

- Brussels Airlines (SN) - also a Star Alliance member
- Edelweiss Air (WK) - a subsidiary of Swiss International Airlines
- SunExpress (XQ)

Finally found a Germanwings aircraft... quite a simplistic livery, I must say.
