The old monastery in the rocks is Panagia Soumela, an old Greek Orthodox monastery. I believe it is a museum now.

This area use to have a big Greek population/peoples some time ago correct? (I believe they colonized the area)

you t tight this was the area of the pontus greek empire. You have there a lot of monasteries and churces left from the past. During the Ottomans time, the greeks and Turks lived together in that area after it was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmed. There are still greek speaking villages in the mountains. It has a very rainy climate and has therefore a very green habitat.
