It was built in the '80s for the expansion of the copper smelter. From what i know, it was never used for it's intended purpose. After 1989 the smelter was closed and gradually demolished. The expansion project was never put into production. Today the chimney is used by telecom operators.

google translate will give a somewhat decent translation of this.

We're sitting on some of the largest copper deposits in Europe and our annual copper production iz zero tons. I'd rather not elaborate on this, since extremely foul language will be used.

Would be a cool idea to transform this chimney into an observation tower!

Is the smokeduct from the smelter to the chimney still existing?

Whereelse in Romania exist also chimneys on mountains interconnected with the factory they belong to by a smokeduct?

Parts of the smoke duct are still in place on the hill.
There was another smokestack in this configuration at the Romplumb lead smelter in Baia Mare. It was smaller and built earlier than the one in Zlatna. After the plant upgraded it's pollution control systems, they added a metallic chimney and the stack on the hill was demolished. Not sure if the Romplumb smelter is still active. Probably not. Baia Mare is also home to the tallest smokestack in the country, the 352 meter tall Cuprom stack, all that's left from a large copper smelter.
