#261 l Marriot Renaissance Center l DETROIT l 221m l 73fl
Marriot Renaissance Center
Detroit, USA HEIGHT: 221m/726 feet FLOORS: 73 floors COMPLETION: 1977 ARCHITECT: John Portman Associates This urban redevelopment project, initiated by Henry Ford II and fifty-one corporations which made up the Renaissance Center partnership, is located a few blocks from the center of downtown Detroit and occupies thirty-two acres of riverfront property. Raised on a podium four stories above street level, the complex is comprised of one 73-story cylindrical hotel (746 feet high) and four 39-story octagonal office buildings. The complex includes a large hotel, offices, shops, restaurants, and convention facilities. Almost from its beginning the complex was controversial. Its symbolism (in its name) was questioned; it was seen as a suburban enclave amid the city of Detroit; thus, its ability to revitalize the downtown was questioned. Since the complex is set off from the city and since its tall sleek reflective forms have no contextual relationship with the lower, masonry buildings of its surroundings, it was sometimes viewed as an isolated fortress. This sense of isolation is only augmented by the concrete berms, housing the utilities for the buildings, which surround the structure, acting as a two-story barrier. The interiors were also seen as being theatrical and maze-like. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

10/10 This building rules.
But I don't understand this building and the Petro Canada Center in Calgary are about the same height but this one always looks so much taller in pictures. |

The Renaissance center is not just one builing, it is the whole complex of 7 buildings, the 1 tall one, the 4 shorter towers around the tall one and 2 shorter ones to the right in the 2nd pic. The tallest one is a Hotel and the rest of the buildings are all office space.

I gave the building a 10. I love this building as much as I love the Westin Peachtree in Atlanta.
The bad thing about this hotel is when you look out the window...you are looking at a building. That's really sucky. If I ever stay there I want to be on the upper floors where I can actually have a view.

The building looks really nice, but the design inside is pretty awful. The have tried to do some contruction as of late to make it less confusing and it has helped out a little. But for the pure size of the project.......8/10.

It's unique... I'm too used to it... if I wasn't familiar with it, or if it wasn't across the river, I'd give it a 9.5
But... I'll give it a 7.5 IMO/

7.5/19 - The large cylinder and the 4 smaller towers are well placed - they relate well to each other, and on the whole form a unified composition that's also a study in contrast between curves and angles. The glass curtainwalls dance with the light well, and they do look impressive at night.
However, the cylinder somehow doesn't seem well-proportioned - just like the Westin, it's too bulky. And the little round buildings somehow don't seem to go with the towers they're connected to, thus detracting from the overall composition. The facades could also use a bit more detail. The white lines are at least an attempt to do I]something[/I] about the roofs, though the strip on the cylinder looks a bit out of place where it is.

The landmark for Detroit. The cilinder in the middle is the best thing of the structure.

5 I don't like this complex... it looks very 70's... in a bad way...
And the complex really takes away from the rest of Detroit's skyline... the great 1920's/30's art deco skyscrapers... it's a dull glassy cylinder... with very ugly boxes surrounding it |
