My gratitude to those who contributed to this thread...

So, let's make this more...IMPERIAL.

Ottoman Exhibition March composed by Ottoman-Italian Callisto Guatelli Paşa (1820-1899) who headed Ottoman military band:

Probably the oldest mall in Europe, still in function. Dating 1461, with more than 3,000 shops. Once (and still it does) it gathered merchants and products from across 3 continents:

Wow! I should've seen these pix before I left for Turkey. Got back about 10 days ago from a wonderful trip!! But I also didn't want to go over-prepared. I just wanted the trip to unfold, with as little preconceived notions as possible, and be surprised.

I was most pleasantly so. Turkey rocks (altho Istanbul just teems with people).

More to come, even more Imperial.

Eyup Sultan Mosque, in the memory of Abu Ayyub al Ansari, a companion of the Prophet Muhammed who died in that place in the siege of Constantinople in 670.

It is the first mosque built by the Ottomans after their conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The mosque was completed in 1458.

And this particularity of architecture can be seen only in that era's Ottoman buildings:
Bird houses

You can see the bird houses just above the gate at Eyup Sultan complex. It is the Ottoman view over the interaction between man and nature, the Creator and the created. Europeans in those times however portrayed the Turks as being completely savage and uncivilised.

Birds in the Ottoman times 600-300 years ago had this level of comfort:
