Prize-winning architect behind Academy of Sciences could design new S.F. Transbay district tower

The Pritzker Prize-winning Italian architect behind the California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park may return to the city to design an officer tower in the Transbay district.

Renzo Piano has been hired to design the 37-story, 400-foot hotel and condimimum project at 555 Howard St., the San Francisco Chronicle reported, near the new Transbay Transit Center and the under-construction Salesforce Tower.

“If we do what we intend, it will be quite an amazing building, with a facade that breathes,” Piano told the Chronicle.

His proposed design calls for wrapping the tower in a double skin of glass with automated blinds in between. That would add visual texture and help control the heat and glare inside the building, the Chronicle noted. The architect also hopes to embed solar panels in the outer layer . . . .
