a new section sounds like a good idea. 500m+ would probably be the better minimum. Should we stick to the naming status quo? I think it would be a good idea to come up with a new designation for 500+ meters, different from "-tall" since megatall has become more widely recognized.

idea: "superskyscraper"

Hudson's idea is a good one, though instead of trying to invent a new word I'd just name one section "Supertalls 300-500m" and the other "Supertalls 500m+". Then when the number of megatalls in the world increases, change the latter section to "Megatalls".

If megatalls starts at 600 meter
SHENZHEN | Ping An Finance Center | 599m | 1965ft | 115 fl | T/O
TIANJIN | Goldin Finance 117 | 597m | 1957ft | 117 fl | U/C
TIANJIN | The Chow Tai Fook Tianjin | 530m | 1739ft | 97 fl | U/C
not be a megatalls

There are at least 11 projects U/C or proposed which are 600m+ (it would be more, if we include projects like Burj 2020 and Iconic Tower). However, it would still be rather quiet in this section. On the other hand, I think it's not that good of an idea to invent a totally new classification of 500m+ towers and ignore the conventional classification of Megalls.
It may be better to create a Megatall section with a height minimum of 600m since this is the official height mark and it would be quite odd to change it to 500m just for the benefit to this forum.
I am also sure that threads like the one of Jeddah Tower will keep the Megatall section alive.

That was not badly hurt, let's 500 meters. Why this strip and not 600 meters, but because it is half a kilometer, the number of the round, but not fresh. Here, see for yourself and decide how best, in the 600 buildings that are constructed, their 4, 500 of the 9 pieces. Height is measured precisely on the spire and not on the last floor. But clearly I have for creating a new partition. Thank you all for your attention.

A megatall is 600m and that should stay like it is, my opionion. It's twice the height of a supertall and 2000 feet. I know half an kilometer is a nice mark but 600m fits better i think.

Good idea indeed!

Another idea: A section for Megatalls but including Proposed/Approved Projects as well as U/C projects to increase the number of threads in the section.

considering the last decade of trends the number of projects of this size is likely to increase, so if we would make a section for 500m towers today on the basis that we have much more projects of that size, it would be the same as to open a thread for 600m projects a few years later. it doesn't really matter where to draw the line

The numbers person in me would agree that 500 is great. But 600 is more benefitting of a new status change since it's well, quite tall.

But for us Americans, we can still always also see it as 600m = ~2,000 feet so it can still be round numerically in both concepts, just not as nice looking as 500.

Yeah I don't mind the thread being empty. Building a Megatall thread isn't for today anyway, it's about tomorrow and the upcoming 5-10+ years.

Hi all.

I agree with a new megatall section at 600 meters. It would be busy just because of the tallest structures on the planet being in there.

There definitely should be a new section, but there aren't really enough towers yet for a true Megatall section.
I think 500m is a better benchmark, but it can't be called the Megatall section, and there isn't really an obvious name.

Perhaps create two new sections so we have 300-400 , 400-600, and 600+.
Supertalls, Supertalls plus, and Megatalls.

Alternately, how about a top 10 or top 20 tallest? that way, a cutoff height wouldn't need to be picked. When new skyscrapers are added, the shortest in the list is moved back into the Supertalls section.

Another idea, it is currently possible to sort the threads by thread title, thread starter, last post, replies, and views.
Would it be possible to add a new column with the heights for each thread so the height is sortable?
Maybe add the floor count as well.
For threads with multiple buildings, use the height of the highest building.

IMO I like the following designations (not for sub-forums per se)

Skyscraper 150 Meters
Supertall 300 Meters
Megatall 600 Meters
Ultratall 900 Meters
Hypertall 1200 Meters

I think a megatall section would be a great idea but disagree on lowering the threshold for what is 'megatall' just to have more topics in it. If the section is a little more sparse because there aren't too many megatalls in existence then so be it, there just aren't that many built yet.

Then again, I think this would be a great idea if the forums were reshuffled like this. We would use ultra and hyper tall down the road. For now, megatall should definitely just be 600 meters.

I didn't want to step on Hudson11's toes by saying that invented words (like "superskyscrapers") usually sound childish, but when it comes to things like "ultratall" and "hypertall" it just gets too ridiculous to not say anything. The CTBUH is not going to let people believe they have their eight year old boys come up with their designations and neither should this forum.

i agree with droneriot's idea. Just have two supertall categories one for 300m+ and one for 500m+.

After that the next step should be 1000m followed by 1600m as ultratall and Hypertall.

I agree but I prefer Ultratall to be at 1200m instead of 1000m if we are gonna follow the rules put and HyperTall at 2400

Anyways that makes the most sense ... 500m is just too tiny
