Finally a thread for this exciting development area, thanks Ludi!

Would be great if you could add a masterplan/map and some general information in post #1, though.

What is exciting about this development? The boring winning design is something a non-descript mid-size city around the world would build...but not a big and wellknown metropolis, which happens to be the capital of one of the richest industrial countries.
The OMA or Libeskind design would have been an instant new landmark for the city... :/

Mate, this isn't about final designs yet. There's not a single architectural design proposed. It's about the masterplan and arrangement of buildings first. And if you check the area, it's to become quite a metropolitan mix that will absorb the enticed passenger. I'm glad they actually intend to build highrises there, that wasn't to be expected at all. Though of course one or two highlight towers (~90-150m) would be great. What was already built is predominantly pretty good urban stuff.

I also hope they'll revitalise the canal embankments between this and Potsdamer Platz soon, maybe someone knows.

There should be more traditional Islamic architecture in Berlin so the majority of the city's population feels more at home.

I am aware this isn't final. But are you honestly thinking A) The facades will get any more interesting and B) 90-150m towers will be build? We will get the usual run-off-mill Lüscher grid facades and the towers will be more like 60-90m high.

Might be, but I'm not so pessimistic about the facades there. She didn't influence the low- and midrises and she won't care about the highrises. It's sorta out of reach for her claws.

The Gleisdreieck is really exciting area in Berlin... long historie of railway, metro, etc...

Before conversion 1902

After - golden twenties

After war -the wall and no-man's-land

After fall of the wall - Construction of the north-south-tunnel

@Erbse, see it's even worse...

Jury decided for 7 60m higrises instead of 5 higher highrises:

This is how it's going to be:

Nothing exciting to see here, let's move on.

I'm personally affiliated with this area, so it's interesting for me no matter what.

I agree, if the image immediately above is anything close to what the final will be, might as well be Schaumburg, Illinois. Boring. Been there, done that thousands of times.

Berlin should present innovativeness, cutting edge, a never-seen-before look. The design the connected the high rises by a horizontal cap structure that was actually another building is stunning. "The Portal of Berlin". It actually seems like an abstract of a mega Brandenburg Gate. This would be an architectural icon like none other.
