The site subject to this application sits immediately to the west of Stoddart Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. The site covers an area of 0.3ha, and is currently occupied by small scale commercial warehouse use including a tool hire outlet, decorating supplies unit and fire safety equipment supplier. The site is principally accessed via Field Close, a non-adopted highway which runs from Clarence Street and terminates immediately before Stoddart Street. The site slopes by approximately 2.6 metres from Clarence Street to Stoddart Street, with Clarence Street at the higher elevation.

A bit out of date and I believe that there others missing, i.e. Clarence Street and the proposed ones next to the current Winn Studios (IF that ever was approved?) and at the corner of New Bridge and Clarence Street...

...and of course Plummer Street (and the list probably goes on)...

Work has started on a £13m student accommodation scheme to create a 409-bedroom development in Newcastle.

The Shieldfield project, which has taken five years to come to fruition, has been designed by Xsite Architecture. Set out over three connecting blocks rising to seven storeys, the scheme will span the area between Stoddart Street and Clarence Street on the east side of the city, regenerating a site previously occupied by light industrial buildings and a brick-built office and warehouse.

Working on behalf of developer BAM Connislow – a joint venture between BAM Properties and Connislow which was specifically formed to create student accommodation – Xsite's brief was to create a project which would maximise the amount of accommodation that could be created while minimising the impact it would have on the local community.

Xsite's founding partner Tim Bailey said: "For a variety reasons this scheme has been a challenging one to get out of the ground. However, it is extremely satisfying for everyone involved to see that all the hard work has paid off as construction commences. Newcastle's student population is growing, particularly with regard to overseas students and with that comes an expectation for higher quality accommodation. I believe that we have not only responded to our client's brief successfully, we have also designed buildings that will more than meet the needs of the students who will occupy them from September 2017."

Once ready for occupation the accommodation will be available as direct lets and will be managed by Fresh Student Living.

This "Clarence Street / Field Street / Stoddart Street Student Accommodation Project" is the latest project to 'graduate' from the general Student Accommodation Thread, earning its own Project Thread, as it is now physically underway and is significant enough to be covered on its own thread.

This new thread has been set up wef 1st May 2016, please post all discussions on this project on this new thread, from now on.
