MANILA | SM Mall of Asia Expansion & Redevelopment

SM MOA: Sy’s ‘greatest project’ marks 10th year

MANILA, Philippines - The Sy family’s 60-hectare SM Mall of Asia is expanding into one of the world’s largest mall on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

MOA will add about 250,000 square meters to its floor area, spanning a total of over 650,000 square meters, which will count as one of the largest in the world, a fitting milestone to a mall that has touched the lives of millions in the last 10 years, the SM Group said yesterday.

As part of its expansion, the company is embarking on a major redevelopment of the mall, which SM and SM Prime chairman Henry Sy once dubbed as the greatest project of his life.

SM to build football pitch on Mall of Asia roofdeck

THE SM GROUP is expanding the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) to include a football pitch on the shopping mall’s roofdeck.

SM Supermalls Senior Vice-president Steven Tan said SM Prime Holdings President Hans T. Sy had wanted the mall, which is currently being redeveloped, to have a “wow” factor.

“Mr. Sy didn’t just want to expand the mall without giving a reason to the people. He said, ‘if there was going to be an expansion, we have to ensure the success of the mall’,” Mr. Tan was quoted as saying in a statement.

The football pitch, designed by Miami-based firm Arquitectonica, is touted as the MOA’s new “wow” factor. The field’s size will conform to the standards for World Cup matches set by the sport’s world governing body FIFA.

The mall’s roofdeck will also feature a botanical garden offering an unobstructed view of Manila Bay.

SM MOA’s current redevelopment is being done in phases. An Olympic-size skating rink, located on the third floor, is expected to be ready by end-2016. A food hall will also open on the third floor.

New brands will also be introduced at the mall, including fast fashion giant H&M’s 3,000-square meter flagship store.

SM Prime’s deluxe hotel Conrad Manila, also located within the MOA complex, is set to welcome guests in June. It will have a new retail podium S’Maison, which will feature luxury retailers, unique concept stores, fine dining restaurants and cinemas.

Also being developed is the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Museum, which will give visitors a unique experience in learning about the 250-year old global trade route where the Philippines and Mexico played major roles.

“With such new and exciting additions, MOA will add about 250,000 square meters to its floorplate, spanning a total of over 650,000 square meters which will count as one of the largest in the world,” SM said in a statement.
