I recall that fench quarter has wider boulevard, this allow the construction of skyscraper far more easier.

Yes - it is located in the former French Concession in Xujiahui.

Exactly. There's no interaction with the street. Hence, the street itself will be deserted. These new developments all seem to have the same problem - the streets outside Jin Mao and SWFC are not exactly big magnets for pedestrians either.

It's not really that, though that is an issue.

hkskyline pulled my words right out of my mouth. The problem with Lujiazui is that it's not designed with pedestrians in mind. The roads are wide, the building fronts are bland, and that all translates to hostility. This is the fundamental reason why Lujiazui has failed to become a vibrant centre and how the people of Pudong have been denied their own high street for so long.

this is exactly what i felt when i was there, empty, bland, cold (literally lol), and just felt overall greyish.
Of course you can't compare this Lujiazui to places across the river such as Nanjing Rd due to it's newness, but it still has barely any street interaction and the roads are too wide. There needs to be way more street shops and overpasses etc... to make the area more vibrant and dense.

By no means am i saying that this new development is poor, I love the whole new skyline! it's just the atmosphere is not as great as you would expect when you are walking around there.

I hope soon that this will change...

idk, well you can't change it now but maybe just increase more shops and have more subway exits dotted throughout the area so there is an increase in connectivity.

last time i was there, found it took so long to walk from one building to another desired one... but this was a few years back so i'm not sure about now.

maybe it'll just take time for a new place to naturally become more 'natural' lol and vibrant

imo i think it shouldnt be very vibrant there anyway since it's where people work like where my parents live in wilmington which is a small city in the northeast us the whole downtown areas are empty at night because no one lives there. during the day time when theres a large working population they're probably busy doing work and shouldnt be out in the streets anyway.

its kind of like the same situation in shanghai where people probably mostly commute to work in liujiazui and live in the vibrant parts of town.
