St. Jakob Foundation | mixed use

Project facts
  • Address: : Heinrichstrasse 200, 8005 Zürich
  • Location: District 5
  • Architects: Caruso St John Architects
  • Completition: 2018

Caruso St John’s design for St Jakob Foundation responds to a collection of loose structures following a viaduct as it cuts through Zurich West. The building has a stepped profile and differentiated volume to accentuate its object quality and to make associations with older industrial buildings nearby. St Jakob has the qualities of a working building; open, robust, with light deep into the plan and a morphology that reflects the processes and activities that take place inside. Gentrification in the surrounding neighbourhood has broken the community’s relationship with its industrial past and this building goes some way to bridge these two worlds.

The building is as compact as possible, with larger floors housing the bakery and packing departments at the base of the building, and a stack of four smaller floors accommodating other facilities above. The south, west and east faces of the building are lined with balconies made in fine, repeated precast concrete elements. Part palazzo, part warehouse, the front facade of the building onto Heinrichstrasse is clad in pre-cast concrete, thin plates that stretch from floor to floor. In these ways the building shares some qualities with the cast-iron buildings of downtown New York.

ZSC Lions Arena | ice hockey venue

Project facts
  • Address: : Aargauerstrasse 70, 8048 Zürich
  • Location: District 9
  • Capacity: 11'600
  • Architects: Caruso St John Architects
  • Completition: 2020

The site for the new Zurich Arena is at the edge of the city, a place where the urban structure has run out. This is a good place for a new sports arena and is an opportunity to mark the beginning of the city with a public building that makes a festive place for ice hockey. The design proposes a building with qualities somewhere between a monument and a tent. The clarity of its structure and volume suggest the archaic qualities of a mosque or caravanserai, an emblematic figure that makes its own place in a situation without specific qualities. The new arena should be different from the neighbouring industrial structures and should clearly mark out a place for public gathering, a meeting place and a gateway to the city.

^ Finally a blockrand project for Zürich! Any more such new urban neighbourhoods planned?
Give them proper roofs, though!

Generally I think, most of Zürich's projects look way too depressing, cold and sterile. A large portion is just gray, modernist, boxy randomness, that could be built anywhere. But it seems to be a problem in most of Switzerland. I guess the almighty modernist architecture school of ETH Zürich and similar institutions are to blame for that.

I'm happy to see this kind of development too. Two major blockrand (or blockrandish) projects were finished recently. I hope they will get some soul as years go by:

Richti-Areal

Limmatfeld

Unfortunately that's the case in 90% of the projects in Switzerland. The famous architecture schools you mentioned focus a lot on functionality and timelessness. But between all this soberness, there are also occasional eye-catchers like Calatravas newest project or The Circle. In general it's crazy how much development is happening if you compare Zürich to Nürnberg for example, which has a similar size.

UBS Headquarter | Renovation

Project facts
  • Address: : Bahnhofstrasse 45, 8001 Zürich
  • Location: District 1
  • Architects: EM2N
  • Completition: 2018

Built in 1916 and expanded in 1953, UBS's head office on Bahnhofstrasse 45, Zurich, will undergo comprehensive renovation over the next two years. While having the necessary upgrades carried out on the premises, UBS is also taking the opportunity to fully renovate the building and enhance its impact on the urban environment. The concept for the renovation came from the general planning team EM2N Architekten AG and is the result of a two-stage architectural competition. The jury were won over not least by the Zurich architects' symbiotic combination of modern and traditional elements. Renovation of the building complex will be completed in 2018.

Project facts
  • Address: : Uetlibergstrasse 233, 8045 Zürich

With the new building, the Uetlihof complex forms one of the largest office buildings in Switzerland and is home to 8,000 workplaces, a new power station, a staff restaurant, and a fitness area for employees. The general contractor responsible for the project was HRS Real Estate AG of Zurich. The ten-story building was constructed in line with the Minergie-P-Eco standard based on plans by Stücheli Architects of Zurich, who designed the existing Uetlihof building between 1974 and 1979. Construction contracts totaling CHF 270 million were awarded mostly to local and regional companies.

Zurich and Geneva rise up rankings of most expensive cities

Swiss cities Zurich and Geneva have once again made the cut as some of the world’s most expensive cities, with both placing in the top five in a new survey from The Economist.

Zurich came in second, after Singapore, while Geneva placed fourth, after Hong Kong. The survey examines the prices of key items and necessities such as bread, wine, petrol, rents, transport, private schools and domestic help. It does, however, not take into account purchasing power in those places.

Both Swiss cities have risen in the rankings since a year ago, when Zurich was in fourth place and Geneva in seventh.

The rise in placement can largely be attributed to the Swiss National Bank’s decision in January 2015 to un-peg the Swiss franc from the euro, sending the value of the Swiss currency skyrocketing.

But, as The Economist Intelligence Unit points out in its survey summary, “Neither city has suffered from Eurozone austerity or economic fallout from falling oil prices to the degree of their EU or Norwegian peers.”

Currency fluctuation has also affected other regions of the world, with the strength of the United States dollar contributing to two American cities – New York and Los Angeles – placing in the top ten for the first time. Conversely, Japanese cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and Australian cities like Melbourne and Sydney, have slid down the rankings due to the weakening of the Japanese Yen and Australian Dollar.

Here's how much items have cost, on average, in the world's most expensive cities over the past decade, in order of the survey results. Rounding out the top ten, in order, are Copenhagen at the eighth most expensive followed by Seoul and Los Angeles.

World's 10 most expensive cities in which to live in 2016:

1. Singapore

2. Zurich

2. Hong Kong

4. Geneva

5. Paris

6. London

7. New York

8. Copenhagen

8. Seoul

8. Los Angeles
