VANCOUVER | Northeast False Creek Developments | App

The City of Vancouver has voted to remove the Dunsmuir and W. Georgia Street viaducts in replacement for plans to revamp Georgia Street connected to a New Pacific Boulevard. To the immediate south of the New Pacific Boulevard, the parking lots are to be converted into green parks.

Staff will start detailed planning and land negotiations and will report back to Council in early 2017 on a revised public benefits strategy as well as an update on negotiations.
Following the completion of detailed planning and design work, and the necessary agreements to advance removal of the viaducts, construction of the new street network could start in late 2017, and be complete by 2020.

The viaducts as of today

City of Vancouver names Gil Kelley as new chief planner

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...nner-1.3705163

From the article...

Kelley succeeds Brian Jackson, who stepped down from the role at the end of 2015.

Jackson's work on some files, in particular the Grandview-Woodlands community plan and the removal of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts, was highly controversial.

In today's statement from the city, continued work on the viaduct removal was listed as a priority for Kelley's term, as were sustainability initiatives, housing affordability and a focus on development along the Broadway corridor.

Kelley will officially step into his new role Sept. 15.

Public engagement begins for Northeast False Creek Area Plan

http://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/pu...area-plan.aspx

Quote:

Public consultation

Thursday, September 15
5:30pm - 9:00pm
Plaza of Nations

Key proposed features for the area

An expanded Creekside Park

Creekside Park Extension will be a destination park for residents and visitors — a place to play, be active, and enjoy nature and culture. Other smaller public spaces will contribute to a variety of experiences for people living, working, or playing in the area.

New housing and amenities

The new residential space provides an opportunity for a mix of new housing opportunities, including affordable homes, as per our Housing Strategy.
We will also consider new amenities for people living in the area in the future, such as child care, community space, and new local services

New street network

Over the last 20 years, vehicle traffic Downtown has declined by approximately 20%, while at the same time Vancouver has grown with more jobs, residents, and transportation trips overall. Research and community consultation over the last three years revealed that a ground-level road network will be more resilient to natural disasters such as earthquakes and five to 10 times less expensive to maintain than the viaducts. View viaduct technical findings
Extensive modeling of the proposed new road network has shown that it will:
Be capable of accommodating 100% of the current traffic volume
Reconnect surrounding neighbourhoods to the downtown core and waterfront

Social benefits of removing the viaducts include:
- A 13% larger park space
- The opportunity to build social housing on City-owned property

From CBC :
Quote:
The city has selected James Corner Field Operations, the same landscape architecture firm that designed New York's renowed High Line Park, to develop the park space.

For a city that avoided highways, they still managed to build highways using regular city streets. Time to remove that mess and get a nice park built!

St. Pauls at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre

The area needs more greenery so I'm happy about where the proposal is going.
