Therefore it is not like building a generic skyscraper or have anything to do with the what size it is but just like building a statue of liberty but much bigger than NY's, or a Sydney Opera House but much bigger.
What is so special about the London Eye that is considered such a unique landmark????

Afterwall the London Eye was NOT the first observation wheel ever build. Austrians builded one in Vienna, more then 100 years before the British did, and is still standing and operational.

It seams like they have kept secret from you the existence of other wheels.

BTW the operator of the London Eye is Dubai Goverment, which owns also 1/3 of the structure.

BTW the way it is 2/3 owned by British Airways so that really doesn't make Dubai the owner hence why you take a 'flight' on the eye.

What makes the statue of liberty unique, i mean there are other statues all over the world, why shouldn't cities build copies of that?

well tussaudes operate the eye, which is now owned by dubai, but that doesnt realy matter.

your argument about copying the wheel is ridiculas though. london has the biggest wheel at the moment so it should stop here?

admitidly it is a london landmark, but this is due to great design and great location more than it is, being the worlds laregest.

should we have stopped the olympics at sydney because it was the best one ever?
should we have stopped the world cup in 1966?
should all buildings bigger than the empire state been prohibeted.

think about the people who had the biggest observation wheel before the eye... they probably thought that london was stealing there land mark too!

When something becomes part of a cities or countries identity it is kind of stealing the idea. Funny how after the London eye there are half a dozen projects for observation wheels all over the world.

I am not complaining about it not being the worlds biggest, London doesn't need to claim things like that, we can leave that to up andf coming cities trying to get noticed.

It is the sudden flood of proposals for major city based London Eyes.

You don't get it, do you. The London Eye, IS NOT THE FIRST observation wheel ever build so london doesn't have copyright protection over them.

For example, Vienna in Austria, builded a 207ft tall one 100 years before London did.

No you don't get it, it is not that it was the first, thats not my argument. The worlds first observation wheel was built in Chicago, so what.

Do you not think its a bit of a coincidence that after the London Eye there are now roughly 6 city based observation wheels? Come on now.

PS try not to be so patronising it does you argument no favours.

plans have changed and now this one will be built in dubai's dubailand leisure park

The biggest wheel in the world due to become reality at Dubailand

Dubailand and The Great Wheel Corporation signed an agreement on 12th May 2005, under which land has been allocated for the construction of the world's greatest Observation Wheel at Dubailand.

Salem and the investor: Mr. Chiel Smits

It will open to the public in 2008.

'We welcome The Great Wheel Corporation to Dubailand where we are building one of the world's finest locations to live in, to have fun and to enjoy and celebrate the good things of life,' stated. Salem bin Dasmal, Chief Executive Officer of Dubailand.

'We are creating unique wonders in partnership with the private sector from across the world. The Great Dubai Wheel is an example of this model cooperation and yet another addition of a world-class attraction to the ever increasing skyline of Dubai,' he added.

The Great Dubai Wheel will be significantly larger than the London Eye, which was recently voted the best tourist attraction in the world. Located in a prime area of Dubailand, the Great Dubai Wheel will further enhance Dubai's reputation as a leading world city, featuring iconic, unparalleled architectural structures. It will sharply raise the visibility of Dubailand.

During the exciting journey on the wheel, the visitor will be able to view distances of up to 50 kilometres and hence will be able to see all the wonders of Dubai. Like the London Eye, the Great Dubai Wheel will attract additional visitors to Dubai giving them an ideal opportunity to plan their stay during the interactive ride on the wheel.

The engineering challenge to create the world's greatest observation wheel has been undertaken by Hollandia, the specialist Dutch engineering company which successfully built the London Eye.

The motivation behind the project is to set up a new landmark structure that matches Dubai's image as an international attraction of the greatest quality standard.

The Greatest Wheel of Observation is a perfect example of mutually beneficial cooperation between two great institutions - Dubailand and Great Wheel Corporation. It shows how the best from across the world can find rewarding opportunities in the beneficial investment and business environment of Dubai and the UAE.

Dubailand, which is fast coming up on 3 billion square feet of land, will be the region's - if not the world's largest and most comprehensive entertainment, tourism, leisure and lifestyle community offering something for everyone.

damn this dial-up shit
double posts deleted

i don't know, when most of dubai's area is built up there won't be too much sand in the air
it also is a lot dryer out there and hopefully the new metro will make the smog disappear a bit
