Mar del Plata: City Overview

Province: Buenos Aires
City: Mar del Plata
Place: City Overview

Mar del Plata was awarded for having one of the most attractive waterfronts in the world. The first golden era of the city was when it was the most exclusive destination of the aristocracy and the highest of the highest class of Argentina, where they had dozens of huge palaces which were influenced by the Norman architecture, some of them even looking like revivals of the medieval castles of Europe, and the old famous Beaux Arts boulevard. Mar del Plata had then its second golden era at the mid-20th century, when the middle class started vacationing on the city and massive amounts of buildings were made, turning avenues like Colón and Peralta Ramos into new modern arteries. In some specific places, the old palaces survived, and that is the case of the Villa Ortiz Basualdo, the Golf Club, and a bigger number of chalets (smaller mansions) in the neighborhood of Los Troncos, the most exclusive one in Mar del Plata. Along with the massive construction boom, the old boulevard was also replaced by two buildings designed by Alejandro Bustillo, both being the icons of the city today.

Basilica of Our Lady Luján

Province: Buenos Aires
City: Luján
Place: Basilica of Our Lady Luján

The Basilica of Luján is doubly special for Argentina: from the point of view of the architecture, is an epic neogothic temple, recently restored and with a new view of the main square who gives a bigger impact from the entrance to the city from the National Route 5. Just next to the Cathedral of La Plata, it is the biggest temple of the country. But its importance lies on the culture of Argentina itself. The building shelters the figure of Our Lady Luján, the most important icon of the country. Next to the bed on every catholic house of Argentina lies a figue of her. The Basilica is also the last stop of a massive peregrination every year. Our Lady of Luján is the patron saint of the whole country, so that tells you how important it is for the catholic argentines (most of the population).

I've seen photos of Mar del Plata long time ago but this time I really appreciate the beauty of the city, the beautiful old mansions built earlier and its nice and neat beaches.
Likewise, the gothic basilica of Lujan is quite impressive, both interior and exterior. I like to believe Lujan is a pilgrimage city?

Indeed. It is actually the heart of the Catholic Church in Argentina.

San Miguel de Tucumán: Resumen

Province: Tucumán
City: San Miguel de Tucumán
Place: City Overview

The city of Tucumán was the cradle of Argentina, in 1816. Today, 200 years later, it’s the biggest capital of the North Argentina. Like in the other cities that once were part of the spanish colonies, its main attractive is the main square (called Plaza Independencia or “Independence Square”), who is surrounded by the Cathedral, the House of Government, and other public institutions. Unlike other big argentine cities, Tucumán has a generous number of huge temples and big palaces in a short range of space, all of them in front or near the Plaza Independencia: the Cathedral, the Basílica de San Francisco, the Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the Palace of the Government with its exquisite Art Nouveau style, the Post Office that seems directly taken from Florence, and several other examples of private buildings of Art Deco, neocolonial, and Art Nouveau styles. Tucumán was blessed, like other big cities of Argentina, with the construction of a large park called 9 de Julio, design by the father of the argentine landscaping Charles Thays.
