New Coop Himmelb(l)au project in Denmark

I have no idea how old or new this project is ... i just found it on the internet, with no date or anything on it ... so, here it is

"Coop Himmelb(l)au of Vienna will be building the new Music House in Aalborg, Denmark.

This is the outcome of the international competition by invitation held by the Aalborg Music House Foundation, in which the Vienna studio's project was chosen over other illustrious names from the international architectural scene.

Coop Himmelb(l)au's project was picked over proposals from Zaha Hadid and Henning Larsen, the other two finalists among the eleven groups invited to participate in the competition.

The new Music House to rise on the Aalborg waterfront will consist of three main constructions all sheltered by a large roof of organic form made of steel and glass, which will appear to float more than thirty metres above the ground.

Each wing of the building will have a specific function of its own: a complex of concert halls, research and teaching spaces for the North Jutland Music Conservatory and the departments of music, design and architecture of the University of Aalborg.

The three principal areas will be joined by an angular foyer, also sheltered by the big glass roof, providing the centre for distribution.
The building is scheduled for completion in 2006."

Interesting building I haven't seen this before. From the website it says that they'll start in 2005 and it's supposed to be completed at the end of 2007. I guess they haven't really started yet.

Yep, it's quite old allright. It is going to be build - or maybe it's allready under construction. However the project turned out to be way more expensive than first estimated, so it was redesigned to something less spectacur. I haven't seen any renderings of the final design...

I don't know whether we have forgotten about this project. It is still alive and kickin'. This is the latest rendering from Coop Himmelb(l)au:

The project has been running for years and has been full of controversy. In the end Coop Himmelb(l)au was also asked to do a master plan for the whole area:

This year, 2008, will (hopefully) see the plans finally get underway. Nowadays Realdania is also involved, which probably makes the financing part a bit easier.

Wasn't this one of the project's that got postponed at the Government's recent ecconomical cuts?

I really like Coop Himmelb(l)au and think the original project looks fantastic, the new one unfortunately somewhat less so. But nothing strange there, I guess. You seldom get more for less. But it's still nice, I hope it gets going soon.

But it sure whould be nice to see it realized.
