AirAsia chides Singapore rival in newspaper

PETALING JAYA: The rivalry between the two Tonys heading two budget airlines in the region continues – with AirAsia taking out a full-page colour advertisement chiding the Singapore-based Tiger Airways.

The advertisement, published in The Straits Times yesterday, depicted a cartoon caricature of a tiger cub on the bottom left with the words: “If tigers were meant to fly, they would be born with wings.”

AirAsia put out the advertisement after Tiger Airways had reportedly accused the AirAsia boss of making a racial slur with his “white guys” remark.

Tiger Airways, headed by British Tony Davis, had earlier expressed disappointment over AirAsia head Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes alleged racist remarks.

In a recent Bangkok Post article, Fernandes expressed his scepticism over Westerners running any successful Asia-based business.

“We’re Asians, not a bunch of white guys running the airlines,” Fernandes was quoted as saying, and this caused the eruption of the war of words between the two Tonys.

According to reports, the Thai Transport Ministry had opposed the 51:49 joint venture between Thai Airways and Tiger Airways – with local industry players questioning the need since Thai Airways already had a 39% share in Nok Air, Thailand’s budget airline.

Malaysia Airlines Bhd today received the first B737-800, the latest generation aircraft which promises both economy and business class passengers a better travel experience.

Passengers will enjoy an in-flight entertainment system which will include audio and video on demand, roomier interior, better ambience, higher ceiling and mood lighting.

The national carrier has placed an order for 55 such aircraft with Boeing and would take delivery of three more by year-end, said managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin.

"We are proud to announce that we will be the first full service airline in the world to operate the B737-800 with the new Boeing Skyline Interior," he said at a press conference after taking delivery of the new B737-800 Aircraft at the Skypark Airport in Subang today.

The B737-800, with up to six hours flight time, left Boeing in Seattle, United States, on Oct 29 on a three-day multi-journey, stopping at Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam before arriving at Skypark, Subang.

The 160-seater aircraft sports a new dynamic livery with red and blue lines representing Malaysia Airlines' corporate colours.

"The dynamic livery epitomises our determined spirit to provide Malaysian hospitality to our passengers," he said.

MAS has also ordered twenty-five A330-300 and six A380 aircraft.
It is expected to take delivery of the first A330-300 aircraft next year.

MAS soars to new heights
Tuesday November 2, 2010

SUBANG: Malaysia Airlines is set to become the first full-service airline in the world to operate the B737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior.

The interior design is similar to that installed in the B787 Dreamliner and features the use of mood lighting to enhance passenger comfort.

Other improvements include a higher ceiling, larger windows, leather seats, touch-screen inflight entertainment units, individual power supply, bigger stowage bins and USB ports for electronics.

The aeroplane is listed at US$70mil (RM217mil) and can accommodate 16 seats in business class and 144 in economy class.

It will make its inaugural flight next Monday to MAS’ new eastern hub in Kota Kinabalu where it will be based, followed by a commercial flight to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.

“This is a refreshing product for customers. Its interior is different, it has better technology and is more environmentally-friendly,” MAS chairman Tan Sri Munir Majid told reporters after the first Boeing B737-800 touched down at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport here yesterday.

Also present at the event were MAS CEO Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin and the three pilots who flew the plane back from Seattle, USA.

The B737-800 project flight operations manager and lead pilot Capt Muhammad Affindy Abd Rahman said everything about the aircraft, including its livery, was designed to be more economical.

“It flies higher, faster and carries more cargo than older models but is more fuel-efficient.

“The livery was also chosen because it uses less paint, thus making the plane lighter.

Capt Muhammad Affindy said the pilots enjoyed flying the plane.

“It’s like driving a BMW,” he said.

MAS has ordered 54 more B737-800, in addition to 25 Airbus A330-300 and six A380 that will be delivered in stages to replace its older fleet.

Airasia X To Fly To Paris Soon, Jeddah And New Zealand Next Year

SEOUL, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- AirAsia X, the low-cost long-haul arm of AirAsia, is to expand its long-haul destination to Paris after Tehran, Tokyo and Seoul.

An official announcement will be made in France soon once flight details were finalised with the French authorities, said chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani.

He said Paris, a keenly-awaited destination, is expected to be a hit among Malaysians.

"Our company is in a strong position, enabling us to expand to new destinations, more so with the addition of another Airbus A330 aircraft by middle of this month, bringing to 11 such aircraft," he told reporters at the launch of AirAsia X's inaugural Kuala Lumur-Seoul direct flight which landed at the Incheon International Airport last night.

Azran said the airline intends to fly to Jeddah, Sydney and New Zealand next year.

On the Kuala Lumpur-Seoul direct flight, Azran said that it was a lucrative market for the airline to take advantage of and to promote tourism between the two countries which would help stimulate economic growth.

He said bookings for the KL-Seoul and Seoul-KL sectors were almost full daily. The airline is using the 365-seat A330 Airbus with 12 premium flat-bed seats.

"We receive encouraging response from Malaysians and South Koreans and we hope to fly 110,000 passengers a year, earning some RM15 million," he said.

The promotion fare starts from RM199 from Kuala Lumpur or KRW100,000 from Seoul. The offer price is from tomorrow to Nov 10 for travelling between April and June next year.

Incheon makes it a grand dozen for AirAsia X
Wednesday November 3, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...802&sec=nation

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia X has touched down at the Incheon International Airport in Seoul, marking its 12th international destination since its launch two years ago.

Passengers flying on this route will experience new “Premium FlatBed seats” that are equipped with universal power sockets and built-in utilities like privacy screens and reading lights on a brand new A330 aircraft.

“We are very excited about this route,” said AirAsia X chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, adding that the new flight offering signified a major advance in the company’s mission to democratise long-haul air travel.

Monday’s inaugural flight recorded a 100% full flight with its 12 premium seats and 365 economy seats taken up.

The airline has launched a new all-in low fare offering from as low as RM199 from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul for the travel period from April 1 to June 30 next year.

Booking period is from Nov 3 to Nov 10. More details can be found on www.airasia.com.

Air Asia X Announces Direct Flights to Christchurch from Kuala Lumpur
– Wed Nov 3, 9:01 am ET

A team representing Christchurch and New Zealand finalised a deal this evening with the world’s fastest growing low cost carrier, Air Asia X, to bring long-haul flights direct from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch.

(PRWEB) November 3, 2010

A team representing Christchurch and New Zealand finalised a deal this evening with the world’s fastest growing low cost carrier, Air Asia X, to bring long-haul flights direct from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch.

The team included Christchurch International Airport (CIAL) CEO Jim Boult, CIAL General Manager Marketing and Business Development, Gareth Owen, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Mayoress Joanna Nicholls-Parker, CEO of Tourism New Zealand, Kevin Bowler, and the New Zealand High Commissioner for Malaysia, David Kersey. They met with the owner of Air Asia X, Tony Fernandes, and his executive team to sign a deal that will bring a new airline to Christchurch with exceptionally low fares. Details of the deal will be released in the coming weeks.

“CIAL has been developing this opportunity over the past two years and is ecstatic that this service has now been approved,” said CIAL Chief Executive Jim Boult. “It’s the fruition of an amazing group effort and the impact of the fabulous experiences available in the South Island. The fact that we had such a strong team, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch and the head of Tourism New Zealand, showed Air Asia X how committed we are to this partnership.”

“This is fantastic news for Christchurch, in terms of travel and tourism,” said Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker. “We are looking at up to 70,000 more visitors a year, bringing in an estimated $70 million more to the region and creating hundreds of new jobs. Having this new airline truly positions Christchurch as New Zealand’s tourism hub.”

Azran Osman-Rani, Chief Executive of Air Asia X, said the choice of Christchurch as its first New Zealand port reflected its great destinational appeal. “Christchurch Airport put up a great business case for why we should come south,” he said. “We were impressed with the potential and the quality of tourism experiences available in the South Island.”

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler who also attended the meeting is delighted at the news.” It’s fantastic news for New Zealand, and particularly the South Island. We are seeing fantastic demand from all parts of Asia and this decision from Air Asia X couldn’t come at a better time.”

Based in Malaysia, Air Asia X has been named as the world’s best long-haul low-cost carrier. With their parent company, Air Asia, they have a network of 130 routes covering 75 destinations.

Gareth Owen, CIAL General Manager Marketing and Business Development, said that at the beginning of the year three Air Asia X executives came to New Zealand to investigate the market here. “We took them on a whirlwind tour of the South Island that included classic experiences like white-water rafting, bungy jumping, climbing glaciers at Mt Cook, and riding on the Shotover Jet,” he said. “We were overwhelmed with support from regional tourism offices, tourism operators, local government and the whole CIAL team, ensuring every aspect of the visit went smoothly.”

David Mackenzie, Chairman of the Board of CIAL, believes the arrival of Air Asia X will be another leap forward for South Island tourism. “There is no doubt in my mind that the South Island of New Zealand is becoming a special destination in its own right. I think we will see more airlines such as Air Asia X bringing people in direct through the Christchurch International Airport gateway.”

Since being launched in 2007, Air Asia X has undergone rapid expansion, adding new routes each year.

The Air Asia X aircraft include some of the latest models from Airbus, including the A330-300 and A340 –300. Air Asia X has 10 Airbus aircraft with an order of 25.

“The additional Air Asia X flights also give Christchurch and South Island residents more travel opportunities to different parts of the world. We can expect many people to travel down from Auckland and Wellington to take advantage of these flights,” said Jim Boult. “It’s a win-win scenario. The team at Christchurch Airport is committed to this partnership with Air Asia X, and we look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration.”

simple livery and leather seats are good for cost saving.

but if they just have either Boeing or Airbus, choose one. that would be much cost saving. just like how AA chose Airbus alone.
