MAS,AirAsia win big at airline awards
Published: 2012/07/13
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

FARNBOROUGH: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia received top accolades from SKYTRAX World Airline Awards, announced at the
Farnborough Air Show Thursday.

The national carrier's reputable cabin crew won the "World’s Best Airline Cabin Crew" and its signature satay won the accolade as the "Best Airline Signature Dish".

Frills-free carrier, AirAsia, bagged the "World Best Low-Cost Airline" and the "Best Low-Cost Airline in Asia" titles in the world’s leading passenger satisfaction awards.

MAS was also awarded a 5-star status in the SKYTRAX World Airline Awards, joining an elite group of airlines in recognition for their consistent and high quality of products and services.

To top it off, MAS was installed as one of the top 10 airlines of 2012.

Commenting on this, SKYTRAX Chief Executive Officer Edward Plaisted said the recognition was "very much on the basis of the broad change seen taking place with MAS."

"We have looked across their line of products and are beginning to see a proper momentum by MAS towards being at a high service level. All of their efforts gave us the assurance that they are back on track," he said.

Plaisted also said the feat by AirAsia in being the world's best low-cost airline for the fourth consecutive year was impressive.

"It is an honour to receive this prestigious 5-star ranking and to be additionally recognised by our passengers as leading the way in service and hospitality on board Malaysia Airlines.

"Of course, this is not the end for us. With our new fleet of planes and a significant refurbishment throughout our services, we hope to win more next year," MAS Group Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said.

AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, when asked on his airline's consistency of bagging the award for four years consecutively, attributed the success to his "great staff with great discipline."

"We fight hard to give low fares yet provide great service," he added.

The awards round off an exciting month for MAS, having joined the elite league of carriers to fly the world’s largest and most eco-efficient airliner, with the launch of the first non-stop A380 service between KL International Airport in Sepang and Heathrow International Airport in London on July 2.

AirAsia has also been on a good run in terms of awards with one just last week when highly influential aviation industry magazine "Aviation Week" ranked the budget carrier as the top performing airline of 2012, beating longer established and renowned airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Ryanair, Europe's largest low-cost carrier.

The World Airline Awards are the global benchmark for airline excellence, with over 18 million travellers from over 160 countries and 100 different nationalities taking part each year in the world’s largest independent passenger satisfaction survey to decide the winners. -- BERNAMA

Malaysia Airlines signs MOU with Rolls-Royce for Trent 900 engine Totalcare programme on A380 fleet
Monday, 9 July 2012

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysia Airlines for long-term TotalCare® services support for Trent 900 engines that will power its new fleet of six Airbus A380 aircraft.

Rolls-Royce already provides TotalCare support services for Trent 800 engines that power Malaysia Airlines’ fleet of 17 Boeing 777 aircraft.

Speaking at the Farnborough International Airshow, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, Group CEO, Malaysia Airlines, said: “We are very happy with the support we receive from Rolls-Royce - TotalCare alleviates the burden of engine maintenance and provides significant financial savings. We look forward to receiving the same high level of support for our Trent 900 engines as we undertake this important fleet expansion.”

Phil Harris, Rolls-Royce, Senior Vice President – Civil Aerospace, said: “We are delighted that, having experienced the benefits of TotalCare, Malaysia Airlines is extending Rolls-Royce support to its new A380 fleet. With decades of experience in developing and supporting world leading jet engines, Rolls-Royce is best placed to provide this service. We look forward to expanding our partnership with this valued customer.”

Malaysia Airlines’ first Airbus A380 entered into service on July 1. The aircraft enables a non-stop service from Kuala Lumpur to any destination in Europe. The Trent 900 is currently in service with five airlines and powered the first Airbus A380 to enter service, in 2007.

In April, Rolls-Royce opened its first purpose-built customer service hub, at the main terminal building in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Malaysia. This will enable the Group to provide a high level of service to Malaysia Airlines and customers across South East Asia.

TotalCare long-term service agreements cover more than 90% of Trent engines globally and support almost 100% of customers in the Asia-Pacific region. They are designed to minimise customer financial risk and enhance operational performance and reliability, allowing operators to concentrate on their core business.

The Trent 900 is the engine of customer choice on the A380, selected by 11 of 16 airlines that have made an engine choice.

AirAsia X teams up with Tune Box to offer in-flight entertainment using tablet
Posted on July 25, 2012, Wednesday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/07...-using-tablet/

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X has teamed up with Tune Box, the digital media arm of Tune Group, to offer the in-flight entertainment (IFE)system, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, onboard all its long-haul destinations.

In a statement yesterday, AirAsia Bhd said guests travelling to/from AirAsia X flights to Australia, China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan may pre-book the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on its website for only RM35 one way.

“The tablet, which has a long battery life of up to 10 hours, is also available for rent onboard all flights for RM45 one way,” it said.

AirAsia X chief executive officer, Azran Osman-Rani, the airline was always on the lookout for ways to further improve its services and enhance the guests’ in-flight cabin experience.

“The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be a great change to our previous portable e-player as it offers one of the best high-definition screens, sound system and a powerful processor all packed in a sleek yet lightweight tablet,” he said.

Tune Box executive director, Sami El Hadery, said the company was honoured to partner with AirAsia X to deliver a sophisticated yet affordable entertainment system. — Bernama

Oneworld to bring MAS new market opportunities
Posted on 25 July 2012 - 11:26pm Eva Yeong
http://www.thesundaily.my/news/446767

KUALA LUMPUR (July 26, 2012): Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is expected to tap into the European, Middle East, US and UK markets and the Kangaroo Route once it becomes a member of the oneworld alliance by year-end, said analysts.

"Oneworld is the second-largest global airline alliance. As a member, MAS will be able to connect oneworld's member network within Southeast Asia and we see more market opportunities, especially on the lucrative London and Kangaroo routes," a MIDF Research analyst told SunBiz yesterday. Kangaroo Route traditionally refers to flights between Australia and Europe.

Apart from dealing with high operating costs such as jet fuel, the analyst pointed to the urgent need for MAS to increase its ticket yield, which is now much lower than its peers, and sees the carrier benefiting from joining the alliance earlier.

"It provides MAS with a chance to code-share with other oneworld partners. Thus, it's better for MAS if it can become a member earlier so as to allow it to tap into new market opportunities and save on operating costs through code-sharing arrangements," he added.

A code-share will enable MAS to share aircraft and save on fuel costs as well as fill in the gaps by providing connecting flights to other members which do not offer direct flights.

"For example, as there is no direct flight from Australia to London, MAS could be asked to provide the connecting flight from KL to London without the passenger having to make double bookings," he said.

However, due to certain rules and regulations set by the alliance, members may face limitations in employing certain strategies as member airlines are not allowed to work with rivals in other alliances.

The MIDF analyst also does not expect Qantas Airways Ltd's poor performance to affect MAS' entry into oneworld. The Australian carrier, which warned of its first annual net loss for the financial year ended June 30, 2012, is MAS' sponsor to the alliance.

"Previously there was talk about the setting up of a joint venture between Qantas and MAS, but the plan was scrapped. MAS is neither operationally nor financially tied to Qantas, thus there will be no material effect on MAS due to poor performance from Qantas," said MIDF.

OSK Research Sdn Bhd aviation analyst Ahmad Maghfur Usman sees the national carrier working with the alliance members on markets such as Europe, the Middle East and the US.

With MAS renewing its fleet, he believes it is a good time to join the alliance as it will enable the airline to offer connectivity to about 800 destinations in 150 countries by riding on the alliance's network.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines country manager for Malaysia and Brunei, Estee Ng, said being part of a global airline alliance benefits passengers by offering seamless privileges across all member airlines.

"Most importantly, the network must be a good fit for the members. For example, China is an important market (for the SkyTeam members like KLM) and SkyTeam has many Chinese partners," she said.

Members of the oneworld alliance are Airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas, Royal Jordanian and S7 Airlines, as well as 20 affiliates.
