For Beijing's case, the museum (ie. area figures), cover the palace's grounds. In fact, there isn't much vegetation in the Forbidden City to begin with. I was told the reason during my first visit back in 2003. The emperors were afraid assassins and intruders would hide among the greenery, so the only trees are restricted to the gardens at the back of the palace towards Jingshan Park ... just some historical background.

Some photos from my 2007 tour of the Forbidden City elsewhere on SSC :

Eastern and 'middle' Hong Kong, along with the Happy Valley Racecourse/Jockey Club in full view.

You can actually see Highcliff's lit-up top all the way from Lamma Island!

Oops didn't mean Eastern, that's not quite Eastern Hong Kong.

That's an old picture anyway, there's a couple of additions in Happy Valley that aren't included there.

Do you know what company that is by the way? (The website culture.com.hk)

I remember the good ol' days of playing school league games on the grassless (despite what the photo shows) pitches of Happy Valley at 9 AM on Saturdays (had to be there by 8 AM for warm up!...on a bleedin weekend!) and Sundays

Nostalgic moments...

Great photo ~ everyone has their favourite cities but HK is in my Top 3. It just looks so exciting, and lives up to the look !

I stayed in the Cosmo Hotel Happy Valley in January ~ so here are my pics. It was a fantastic stay.

I guess I should also mention my "adopted" hometown ~ Kuala Lumpur ! I've just bought a condo to admire KL's skyline. Here are views from my balcony

[QUOTE=_00_deathscar;15527144]Another gem from the Cosmo:

Gosh Fabulous shot 00 deathscar, but not *from* the Cosmopolitan Hotel.... but looking towards it, next to the racecourse.
I think the shot must have been taken from the ManuLife Building ........
One thing I've been meaning to ask for a long time .... there is a tall slim tower in the distance to the right of this shot. It has a T type constuction on the top which only seems to hold up a massive advertising hoarding for Panasonic, I think... (facing the harbour)

The construction looks as though it is large enough to be almost a multi -storey car park (!).
My question is ... does it have any other use or are all those tonnes of steel on top of that building just to hold up a sign ??

Been wanting to know for ages

I believe that sign is for Epson and there is no use for it but as a sign.

Happy Valley used to be one of the most boring districts in HK Island with the exception of the race course. It's surprising that alot of high-rises are sprouting up in this area especially the skyscraper wall at Leighton hill

Ship for you

BAGUIO

For those who are more knowledgeable of local Hong Kong affairs and recent history, Happy Valley has always been a quieter, more posh area where the rich live in relatively shorter buildings with open air views of the racecourse and skyline. Leighton Hill destroyed that, but thankfully the district remains fairly peaceful with no large-scale major redevelopment projects.

The racecourse also adds to the excitement to the district, considering horse racing turnover was HKD$64 billion last year (Shatin + Happy Valley). Attendance reached 1.92 million in the 2005-2006 season.

Thanks Skybean
Just another story of glorious HK excess. I know this is really nerdy, but just imagine the stresses on the top of that tower in a typhoon, that sign must act like a huge sail.

I read somewhere that Hong Kong earns more in one racing day than the whole of United Kingdom does in a year (on horse betting of course).

The Jockey Club is trying to diversify its revenue streams to include a whole range of betting alternatives, from horses to football to overseas betting.
