Tianjin is an emerging powerhouse that is being nurtured by the central government. It's a port city and they're diversifying into financials, with a new business district under construction to match. Not surprisingly, Tianjin was selected recently to be the through-train investment centre for Hong Kong equities, which has driven the Hong Kong market to record highs.

Dalian is not targeted as a primary city for development by the central administration. Tianjin is being groomed to be the financial centre for the north, and with good reason. It's only an hour's drive from Beijing from centre to centre. They're literally neighbors.

I've said it before, but the problem with Kowloon's skyline is that there are not many vantage points that take advantage of its height, because most developements are quite spread out (think distances between Union Square, Langham Place, Hanoi Road, Harbourfront Landmark). So the skyline looks quite poor as viewed from Wan Chai and Central, but great as viewed from Lei Yue Mun, Braemar Hill and Tin Hau (because some of the more prominent developments align).

Kowloon's skyline will not see dramatic development after ICC. There will be more infill projects here and there, but I don't expect much more skyline development en masse until Kai Tak redevelopment is under way.

A great vantage point would be the pavilion on Lung Cheung Road.

Union Square doesn't look that bad when viewed from The Peak

The best angle to see Union Square is likely from the seas to the SW, since Sorrento, Cullinan, ICC, and even Harbourside are visible. Same with the SE view, such as from the Star Ferry.

A fairly dated photo :

From the Peak, some of the key towers are hidden, and the same goes with the view from the north.

True but again, alot of tourist want to take a photo of HK Island with Union Square on the background, the Peak isn't a bad vantage point.

There are better vantage points. Tourists don't often know the hidden spots and even if they do, they're not so likely to take the time to find their way there if they're in town for only a few days.

It takes some exploration to find the hidden spots. But the die-hard ones will try to find them even if they're in HK for a few days.

Depends. A lot of the spots are remote and are not readily accessible by transit, and a visitor in town for a few days in unlikely to hit all those spots and have the best lighting conditions and weather to cover them adequately. Try going from Jardine's Lookout to Fei Ngo Shan and Tai Mo Shan in one day.
