Ferris wheels are tacky. They belong in amusement parks not big cities. Central London is sometimes criticized for being one giant theme park. Erecting the London Eye didn't help matters at all. Ferris wheel? Don't build one.

I've never heard of London being called a giant theme park before? Las Vegas though? I think the London Eye is good for London because (until the Shard is completed) there aren't really any high public viewing points to view the city from.

las vegas is meant to be exactly what it is! an entertainment haven, a giant theme park like you said, and it has ever since become the subject of the world's admiration, and sometimes envy, for that matter! i wouldn't be surprised why other cities like macau would be proud to be the "las vegas" of asia, and other asian cities are working hard to steal the title!

about london: like what they said, to each his own. some people like london eye, some don't. and i think it's a good addition to the city.

I think Jude Law was most famous for having said it; I forget what movie that was. Central London certainly feels like an amusement park sometimes: jam packed with tourists coming to gawk at over the top Englishness. Trinkets, mugs, t-shirts, Trafalgar Square, tour buses, etc. Central London has become a caricature of itself.

Times Square in New York has that quality too. Central London has gone too far down that road. The Shard is a great addition to London, the London Eye comes off as just another tourist gimmick.
