Bahrain to remove roundabouts
Bahrain to remove roundabouts
Manama Bahrain is to get rid of all roundabouts as part of a national programme to revamp its roads network. Sanad Roundabout will be the first to be razed this year, followed by the Pearl Roundabout and those at Sehla and Government Avenue, Works and Housing Assistant Under-Secretary for Roads and Sewerage Essam Khalaf said. Razing a roundabout on a main highway would cost up to BD500,000 while installing new traffic lights up to BD30,000, he added.

Great, they cause traffic jams and are an old british system. The only cool roundabout is the pearl roundabout cause it has the monument, the others just cause uncessary traffic jams. Guys i'll be in London for a few days so i'll disappear from the forum and be back later. Enjoy.

It would be such a shame if they remove the Pearl Roundabout cuz it is a national landmark!
It is almost the equivalent of removing the eiffel tower from Paris or Big Ben from London!!

I think this is a very smart move. Qatar is also moving slowly to move all major roundabouts and replacing them with traffic lights or tunnels/flyovers. Roundabouts cause unnecassry traffic and a lot of accidents.
I doubt the pearl roundabout will acctually be removed, a really huge flyover was constructed right next to it, so that should control the traffic. As for makkah, no offense, but makkah might not have any roundabouts, neither does it have one decent road. The whole city needs reconstruction. |

There's nothing wrong with roundabouts, if anything they are a much more efficient and elegant solution to managing low to medium density junctions. The problem is the person who had the bright idea of installing them on 6-8 lane highways, which is crazy.

I don't think the Pearl Roudabout (LULU) will be destroyed, it's a landmark for the country and plus the flyover solved the traffic problem there (not that you don't get stuck on the flyover, but made the traffic flow more smoother).

Aren't they related to arab spring? Because every major demonstration takes place in a roundabout. Pearl Square of Bahrain, Tahrir Square Cairo and Green (Martyr) Square Libya.
