There are virtually hundreds of beautiful Bavarian cities, villages and lakes within an hour drive from M that would need months to explore properly. Which i intend to do some time. Also visited Stuttgart, Dresden and many surrounding villages. Berlin and Hamburg are on my agenda also, and I know these are both beautiful cities, but saying that "M has nothing to offer in comparison..." sounds a bit like overstatement. What is it that Berlin or Hamburg have and Munich doesn't?
There's no denying Munich is a very fine city but I have to confess I was a bit disappointed with it. So much of the post war development is very bland (and there is a lot of it) and the overt commercialization in the area around the famous Town Hall was a turn off. Of course the city suffered huge damage in WW2 and they have done much to repair the damage which is to be applauded but I don't think it can really compare to either Vienna or Budapest both of which also suffered tremendous damage.

I agree with much of what you've stated. Munich came across as rather sterile and somewhat provincial in feel for me. Certainly hasn't got that 19th century grand metropolis feel of Vienna and Budapest, but still a charming and sophisticated city nonetheless.

Grenoble is an excellent choice for this topic's theme! Also, I think most major Swiss cities would probably fit the bill.
