I heard when the system was first formed, it was plagued by massive crowding, inefficient service, bad schedules, faulty smartcard software, overcrowding metro, and there were even riots against the bus operators.

Have those problems been resolved?

almost all of them are already resolved, the buses were crowding 'cause there wasn't enough buses to feed all the people who daily uses the public transport, today there are 4,139 main buses and 2198 local buses or feeders ,the smartcard has been already resolved, waiting times has descend from ~30min in 2007 to ~8-10min now (4-8min in Rush Hours) there's more metro trains.

i dont know nothing from the problem the bus operators.

pd: by 2010, the older buses will be completely replaced by over 4,600 new vehicles.

I love the Santiago metro system. It is clean, fast and efficient and safe. I had no problems taking the trains late at night or at any time of day. The trains are busy at all times; Line 1 is the busiest with trains running, it seems, in all time periods every 2 minutes or so.

The new trains are beautiful, full-length walk through. Most of the network is rubber tyre metro - Montreal style - with at least one line being conventional rail.

From the looks of it Santiago has the most extensive metro in South America.

Are there plans to extend a line out to the airport?

I think you are wrong. Despite the Mexico City's metro is bigger than Santiago's in terms of length, the former serves 28 million people (metropolitan area) with 202 Km (126 mi), while the latter serves 6 million people (metropolitan area too) with 85 Km (20 km is under construction). If you calculate the ratios you will get that Mexico City's metro serves 139000 inhabitants per km, while Santiago's metro serves 70600 inhabitants per km.

Make your own conclusions.

What do you mean by "efficient" ?

Santiago's metro was not built to decorate the city , but to serve as the backbone of the public transportation in the city (Santiago has an integrated system). It transports almost the 50% of the people and commuters in the city every day.

I don't understand the narrow mind of some people who think that a public transportation system cannot be "pretty" and efficient at the same time (is it a mentality of a developing country??).

Regards

PD: I guess some Mexicans will come and say that Mexico City's metro belongs to DF, but the city spans beyond the DF including the Mexico State.

No, actually Sao Paulo (Brazil) metro is more extensive than Santiago's. And please, no Chileans need to argue than relative to the size of each city & the number of passengers carried the difference is not such, blah, blah, blah. Sao Paulo's metro is more extensive, period.

Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo (when people talk about São Paulo Metro) have 61.3 km. Metro de Santiago have 84.4 km. You can argue that with CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos), São Paulo have about 330 km, but you will bring the question about the accountability of the CPTM lines (to me, this is not an important question). For some (including me), it is accountable, at least the most part. For many, it is not accountable, not even some parts. But use this just to say "my system is bigger than yours" is very foolish, in my opinion.

If one wants to argue per capita, I think the new Santo Domingo metro might win.

Sounds like we have a case of "metro envy".
