NEW BUSES FOR THE TRANSANTIAGO SYSTEM

When planning the system of known public transport like Transantiago, the city of Santiago was divided in ten intercommunal areas, according to its interactions in terms of activities and trips. With Transantiago, each area will have premises-nourishing services that will allow to move within the area to the most frequent destinies, and than they will approach the people to the main services. All the services of a nourishing area will be adjudged to a unique operator, reason why there will be no competition among them

This is a map of the system. The bolded red and brown lines will be finished in 2009. The system will have then 105km and 108 stations, the largest in South America.

I liked this one and I also liked this metrosystem stations and trains. How big is this city and does the metro cover the most important places? Just wondering?

Regards,
Michal

Santiago has 5.6 million inhabitants living in a "circular" area of about 15-20 km. from city centre (a triangle enclosed by red line (L1- south), yellow line (L2-west) and Baquedano Station. (L1-L5). L1 runs beneath the city's main corridor (Alameda Bernardo O'higgins) links most of the commercial zones, and even has an station just 1 block away from the government palace (Palacio de La Moneda). Partially, L2 runs on the median strip of Autopista Norte Sur, a 40-year-old expressway refurbished recently to reach new standards (including free flow toll system)
L5 runs south-west and crosses the city centre at Plaza de Armas, Santiago's main square and origin of all the milleage of chilean roads.
L4 (will be inaugurated partially on Nov 30th), is a mix of circular and radial line. The circular part runs on the median strip of a new highway (Americo Vespucio Sur) built over the homonym old ring avenue.
