I saw in some website that Santiago is now planning to build a light rail system. Is it true? If yes, what will be it actually – a light rail like TREN DE LA COSTA of Buenos Aires, or a tram like PREMETRO E2 / TRANVIA DEL ESTE of Buenos Aires? Please write details.

If it will be tram, it will be the second South American city which will return tram as a modern network.
If it will be light rail, then will be only light rail of South America. Former light rail of Campinas has closed (!), and Rio de Janeiro’s system has converted to metro (line 2).

I’m fond of tram.

Answer #1: Yes.

Answer #2: Tram.

Details? Modern tram (probably Alstom) going through the municipalities of Las Condes, Vitacura and Lo Barnechea in the eastern parts of Greater Santiago.

That's it.

Cheers.

Well, yes... we assume so. But my friend, planning in Santiago is very improvised. It's not like in Europe where they plan things meticulously for years and years and in the end ... they end up building nothing (or something) and there exists transparency (at least in Northern Europe that is the case). Chile's typically Latin American in the sense that there's no transparency during the planning process so you really never know what they're up to. It's only thanks to the press that you get to know the projects. Yes, there have been talks for a few years now about the "Las Condes Tramway" and now the latest news are it could (or would? Who knows...) extended through neighbouring Vitacura up to Lo Barnechea. The Las Condes Tramway is one of various projects in the Greater Santiago Area.

What's the point of drawing something if it could be changed? This month? Next month? Within six months? Who knows.

We were more positive, say two years ago but lately things have been going slow and news have been coming sporadically.

Let's remain patient instead.

Stay tuned in the meanwhile enjoying news and pictures of the city's Metro.

Begin bidding for construction of new lines 3 and 6 of the Metro

The autopilot will further train and air conditioning. The building work will begin the first quarter of 2012.
by Manuel Valencia and Consuelo Argandoña

Six to eight months delay the bidding process works to build the lines 3 and 6 of Metro, which will begin to lift the first quarter of next year.

According advanced the chairman of Metro, Raphael Bergoeing, the work will involve making several bids to meet the main objectives of these new routes, service quality, efficiency and safety.

In this latter respect, the Metro prepares major innovations: the cars have air power, why not be electrified rails, as known. This seeks to avoid accidents or suicides of passengers rush to the railway.

To study this change, the subway company has published on its website the first of which includes the project tender. As defined in the document to the bidders, is a consultant "to study the definition of the most convenient alternative supply new lines planned, so as to optimize the costs of investment and operation of your electrical system."

Bergoeing announced that there will be other changes which will be added in new lines. "Many, I count over 35 different technologies, some very apparent to the user and others less so," he predicted.

Among these stations will be built with glass enclosed platforms, thereby improving security and also facilitate the installation of air conditioning on trains. Well, as a central platform and common, while the trains will run along the sides.

Trains without drivers

Also the doors will be different: instead of open or close simultaneously, only be activated in case of passengers press a button to open them. Thus, energy is optimized air-conditioning involving trucks.

Among the most significant changes is the automation of trains, ie they will not be driven by drivers. This technology can optimize travel times and ensure the train stops in time with the doors, this will have looked Asian and French experiences. Also look closely at the new Metro de Sao Paulo, which premiered this system last year.

The benefits of the new lines have already led to changes in the communes. In Conchalí, Mayor Ruben Malvoa noted that it is updating the master plan for the commune. "With this we will make it more attractive to build independence," he said.

For the expert in transport of the UDP (Diego Portales University), Louis de Grange, all this will allow a comprehensive improvement of the service. "They are global standards. Line 14 of Paris or Tokyo have those characteristics. Improve safety, reliability and travel times, because there is less interruption of service, the commercial speed of the network," said De Grange .

President Piñera introduced new lines 3 and 6 of the subway and plan of improvements of the current network

The new lines will offer better service through automated driving trains and air conditioning, more security with platform doors, cameras on trains and the elimination of the electrification of routes, in addition to high operational efficiency and consolidation of the Metro as a underground transport network, incorporating 10 stations combined, among others

The President, Sebastián Piñera, accompanied by Transport Minister Pedro Pablo Errazuriz, and Chairman of Metro de Santiago, Raphael Bergoeing, presented on Wednesday the new and innovative lines 3 and 6 of the Metro, as well as major projects to improve service in the current subway network. These include the purchase of 108 new cars that will provide more comfort in lines 1, 2 and 5, and adding air conditioning systems in new cars for Line 1.

Lines 3 and 6 provide for 28 new stations which will benefit five new community: Huechuraba, Conchalí, Independence, Cerrillos and Pedro Aguirre Cerda and join together about 129 million trips per year.
Thus, Line 3 includes a total of 18 stations, which shall be installed from the north of the city, connecting North Independence Amerigo Vespucci, passing through the center of Santiago, following Avenida Matta, Irarrázaval Tobalaba to reach beyond Square Egaña.
Meanwhile, Line 6 found 10 stations, which connect the western sector of Providencia Santiago Cerrillos joining and crossing areas such as Franklin, blur, the National Stadium and the axis Pedro de Valdivia.

Both projects have a cost of U.S. $ 2,758 million and it is contemplated that Line 6 to begin operations in mid-2016 while Line 3 will, in its first phase in 2017 the entire project finishing in 2018.

"We are very proud to make available to all Chileans, a project we've done after a hard and thorough work of research and planning, collecting the concerns of our users and compiling the best experiences of the world's most advanced meters. We are confident that all efforts in the run up to the presentation of the new lines will allow further progress in the path of world-class subway. In addition, these new projects Santiago Metro reaffirms its role as a structural axis of public transport, more efficient, safer and better service, "said the President of Metro, Raphael Bergoeing.

The realization of this project consolidates Metro de Santiago as the guiding principle for transport of the city, being supplemented by feeder buses. Also, new lines will be fully coordinated with the plan of the Ministry of Transport corridors to efficiently meet the travel needs of the capital. Furthermore, the combination with Metrotren station starts the connection with other means of transport close to the capital.

"The new subway lines come to complement the work as a government we are doing throughout the Public Transport System for our capital Santiago has the best public transportation in Latin America. Santiago With these new stations will have more than 200 kilometers of exclusive corridors for public transport, ensuring greater coverage and better travel for users. Metro is part of Metro Transantiago as advances, advances Transantiago, "said Transport Minister Pedro Pablo Errazuriz.

Note that the design and plots of the new subway lines were carried out after detailed study of social return, conducted by the Ministry of Transport Planning (Sectra) and were then validated by the Ministry of Planning (Mideplan) .

Thus, upon completion of both lines, Metro will have 140 kilometers of network, 136 stations, covers 26 municipalities and 2.7 million daily trips for a total of approximately 800 million trips per year.

Improvements to the existing network

In addition to the construction of lines 3 and 6 and includes the main demands of its users, Metro de Santiago implement a set of projects aimed at improving the quality of current service delivery across the network, considering the additional purchase of 108 cars that provide more convenience when traveling on lines 1, 2 and 5, the incorporation of air conditioning in the new trains for Line 1, modernization of older cars, the construction of lifts throughout the network that gives total accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and deployment of WiFi service in 21 seasons.

"Communication with our customers has allowed us to identify their main demands regarding the operation of our service. This is how we will implement new air conditioning in the trains of Line 1, lifts the entire network to ensure full accessibility for people with reduced mobility and connectivity through WiFi, among other investments, which now allow us to create better standards of service to all our lines, "said Raphael Bergoeing.

Along with the above, the current station is connected to lines 3 and 6 will be upgraded to welcome new users. In particular, for the same purpose, the station that connects Tobalaba Lines 1 and 4, will have a significant investment to expedite the flow of passengers as part of the many solutions required to address the sector's development.
Taken together, these measures involve an investment of U.S. $ 406 million.

Details of Lines 3 and 6 projects

Projects Lines 3 and 6 are the main challenge of growth for the Metro since it opened in the 70, considering both the extent and characteristics of new lines.

Together, the two lines involve:

- 37 km of new network.
- 28 stations.
- 129 million trips per year.

or 12 beneficiary communities (of which five are new).
o More than one million potential beneficiaries.
Less pollution or to reduce 2.9% of PM10 and CO emissions.

Social benefits

Are the new trains going to be steel-wheeled or rubber-tyred?
