SLOVAKIA | Urban Transport Compilation

Košice tram modernisation continue

DPMK, the public transport operator in the Slovakian city of Košice, has awarded Vinci subsidiary Eurovia a contract worth around €80m for the second phase of the modernisation of the city’s 33km standard-gauge tram network.

Construction will begin on the second phase before the end of this year and will take around two years to complete, involving works on 449 engineering structures. The contract encompasses track renewals, utility diversions and modernisation of electrical equipment, signalling, lighting, and platforms. A new passenger information system and CCTV will also be installed.

DPMK previously awarded Eurovia a €20m contract for the first phase of the modernisation project, which was implemented between April and October 2015.

In addition to upgrading infrastructure, DPMK is also modernising the tram fleet with the purchase of new VarioLFplus vehicles from Pragoimex, Czech Republic.

Some news from Slovak cities:

Banská Bystrica
5 new buses Iveco Urbanway 18M are in service, 2 new trolleybuses SOR TNB12 are since february in depot waiting for entering to service.

In progress is tender for 15 buses with length 12 m and 30 buses 18 m long. In city are all of 46 Vario LF2plus trams, so all Tatra T3 trams are out of service. However, one of new Vario has already burned. This year arrived also next 9 electric buses SOR EBN 11.

All service in city is operated by only one bus. Since July it´s electric bus Škoda Perun (based on Solaris Urbino 12), so Šaľa is probably the first European city with fully electrified public transport.
