Delivery of the first production car, 4403, has been delayed until late April according to the TTC’s Brad Ross, but the rate of production can be ramped up by Bombardier. In any event, 510 Spadina will operate with new cars effective August 31, 2014.

Best Canadian Cities for Public Transit
March 11th, 2014 by Matt Lerner

Quote:
Following on our ranking of the best U.S. cities for public transit earlier this year, today we’re announcing our first ranking of the best Canadian cities for public transit.
We’ve calculated the Transit Score of 38 Canadian cities and almost 1,000 neighborhoods to help you find an apartment for rent or home for sale with a better commute and more transportation choices.
In comparison to the United States, Toronto and Montreál score better than any large U.S. city except New York and San Francisco. And Vancouver, with a Transit Score of 74, trounces nearby Seattle (our home town), with a Transit Score of 57.

Quote:
Rank City Transit Score
1 Toronto 78
2 Montréal 77
3 Vancouver 74
4 Winnipeg 51
5 Ottawa 49
6 Brampton 48
7 Québec 46
8 Edmonton 44
9 Calgary 43
10 Hamilton 42

I've never been a fan of elevated systems in dense urban environments either but they seem to be so common in some places, likely due to the lower cost. I can see why the pricing would make them tempting.

But since monorails supposedly block less light from the street one would have to take that into consideration...

Nice

I think the new trams look better in photos than in the renders.

I don't know much about Toronto transit, but I like how they have apparently retained the "retro" route names over the decades. "Downtowner" sounds a lot more awesome than "502"

Our illustrious mayor is saying he'll phase out streetcars if he gets re-elected this year. I doubt this would happen, but that's one of his campaign pledges anyways.

I've some serious doubts Rob Ford can actually think.

Even if he will be re-elected, I don't really think the City Council will pass such hideous proposal.

SO why didn't he get rid of streetcars already when he was a mayor? Why now? when Toronto buys new streetcars hahaha

That is some noon logical announcments.
And what does he offer instead?
Lol I googled and read what he said even more loooool let's build subways hahahaha
Maybe the most stupid politician I have ever seen.

Somebody must tell him that oone day he can get hit by a streetcar just "accidentaly"

He backed off from that promise when he was elected, but now he's putting it back into his campaign. The new streetcars were bought by the previous administration and Ford doesn't want new streetcars. It doesn't really matter though as Council has the final say.

apparently he delayed the delivery of the new streetcars by an entire year by not signing some document. He only signed it once they began to incur financial penalties.

Something I was thinking:

Would it be a good idea if they converted all lanes that street cars run in mixed traffic to HOV lanes? Maybe it would ease some congestion/traffic issues with the streetcars and traffic

Are there plans to replace the trolley poles with pantographs?

They are slowly upgrading the overhead wires so that they will be pantograph compatible. They technically are right now, but over time the wire will wear through the pantograph. What they are doing with the upgrade is staggering the wire so that it does not come in contact with the same location on the pantograph.
