I was until now unaware of the beauty of the undestructed Königsberg. Perhaps that the Castle and the "Börse" on one day are reconstructed by the Russians. Most reconstruction will folow the way the Polish did this in Gdansk or Wroclaw, abolishing the typically German way of building during the turn of the century. Modern architects hate the buildings of this period (Wilhelminian, Gründerzeit, Jugensdstill and reform Still) and also the "Neo" additions built upon older buildings.

Churches were also victims in the DDR

The church on the right was damaged and later torn down like so many churches.
The Department Store clearly visible survived but was later "modified" with a new "functional" fassade hanged before the old and removing the steep roof. A few months ago this old fassade was removed (!!!) to built another Bunker in Germanies major cities to rob them definitely from their past splendour and the magnificent urban city landscape from before WW2.

Poor Jerries, they keep on mutulating themselves.

In Berlin a Swiss Iron Lady now reigns and tries to demolish the already heavily damaged capital further, On the Friedrichswerder neue "Hochbunker" straight from the Atlantik Wall are being projected as an attack on the planned reconstruction of the "Schloss" or to create an "unfriendly" surrounding to that Palace.

The Germans lost a lot great pieces of history during the war, but I think Dresden is a great example of how cities should be rebuilt historically accurate

Nuremberg looks amazing but I can't help but think that vast tracts of the old city looked about ready to fall down!

Since the majority of buildings outlasted half a millennium, they must have been built quite properly.

Sehr schöner Strang, weiter so!

Looking at all these beautiful photos makes me SO sad and mad... What the hell happened to architecture over the past ~100 years?

What I love most about towns than is that they actually had an end! You would drive towards them through nature all the way to the first street, or even better town gate!

Now days it's getting of the highway, driving along the detour with a view on some decaying postmodernism, getting lost in some awful shopping mall/car sales area, arriving to the center to find out you must park five miles away and than finally you walk to the main square and say "wow this town is beautiful" but what you are actually talking about is the historic center...
