Kongisberg of all larger cities displayed in this thread was definitely the "plain jane" middle sister.

Kassel Gründerzeitviertel

Ingwaeone: please let us show Kassels Western Viertels with huge Gründerzeitbauten, Karlsruhe with its very fine Hauptpostgebaüde, Mannheim with the beautiful curved Gründerzeit streets; Würzburgs tight and harmoneous city landscape; the beautiful inner city and Gründerzeit Viertel of Chemnitz and once major city of Plauen.

I personally am a fan of the next 17 city prewar landscapes: Berlin (1), Hamburg (2), Dresden (3), Chemnitz (4), Frankfurt (5), Magdeburg (6), Würzburg (7), Potsdam (8), Görlitz (9), Kassel (10), Mannheim (11), Stettin (12), Breslau (13), Karlsruhe (14), Halle (15), Erfurt (16) and Wuppertal (17).

Yes, Sir! Reagarding Mannheim and Würzburg, I already have posted several large aerial-views. Also, I think your favoured prewar-landscapes lack Augsburg, Ulm, Freiburg and Bremen of course. Although Chemnitz was impressive and the richest city before WWII, it wasn't exactly on the same artistic level in terms of historic value as its German rivals.

These photos kill me. I have been looking up photos of UK and German cities recently and so much was lost. So many historic cities turned into dull post war architecture, especially in the UK. Travesty!

That may be the impression from the photos posted here, however, Konigsberg was indeed a jewel of the Prussian and German national architectural character having many important and notable structures. It's juxtaposition with water also created a very pleasing and beautiful cityscape. It wasn't the location of the coronations for all the Hohenzollerns for centuries for nothing.

Now you mention it...

This painting by Anton von Werner shows the coronation of Frederick I of Prussia. This is a rare photograph taken inside the Ruhmeshalle in Berlin, before its destruction during WW2 (v. Werner's second Proclamation was also on display there).

And now this painting by Adolph von Menzel: The coronation of Wilhelm I as King of Prussia.

Both ceremonies took place inside the Schlosskirche at Königsberg Castle.

Mannheim on street level. Although some pictures date back in the post-war period, yet you won't find them in Mannheim today.
