The comment is ridiculous. So much medieval architecture was destroyed during WW2. The allies even targeted medieval city centers due to the tinderbox nature of their rows and rows of half-timbered buildings.

Indeed - and some of the most important German old towns burned down due to the bombing - like Frankfurt, Kassel, Mannheim, Rostock, Braunschweig, Mainz, Hildesheim, Dresden, Nuremberg, Cologne, Pforzheim, even rather large swathes of Rothenburg and more...

Anyway, this is a picture thread. Of course it's an emotional topic, but it's beyond me why on any page there's someone starting BS discussions about politics, victims and whatnot.

This thread is wonderful and needs to remain open.

Many people don't know German history.

All biggest medieval cities in Germany through new ages became small cities because are the free cities and german kings for that reason dont like them because don't controled their money.

Villages like München, Hamburg, Berlin... through new ages became big cities.
That new big cities became jealousy on old cities and start build in neomedievalism.

Biggest cities in Germany through middle ages are Lübeck (richest city), Erfurt (4 oldest german university), Regensburg (Bavaria capital), Bamberg, Heidelberg (3 oldest german university)... and Wien (2 oldest german university), Salzburg, Graz... and Prague (1 oldest german university), Strasbourg...

That kind of lucky have Brugge and Amsterdam. Most important harbours - Brugge (middle ages) - Amsterdam (new ages) - Rotterdam (19 century, before was village). Only Rotterdam was destructed.

it is not BS discussions, I only wanted to say that richest german medieval architecture was not destroyed.

No idea what your point is, but please go elsewhere (skybars or whatever) if you'd like to discuss these issues. Thank you.

PS: It's annoying that I have to watch how this section is left almost unmoderated, now that I was demodded...

Yeah I do, but there are many threads in need of more attention currently. Try your best.

Well, cologne for example was a long time the biggest or even one of the biggest german cities in the middle age. Other very important and destroyed cities with a medieval cityscape until the war were Augsburg, Mainz, Frankfurt, Braunschweig(!) Aachen and Ulm. So to say that the "richest german medieval architecture was not destroyed" - is just wrong.

Anyway, It's a pity that so much of this medieval and renessaince architecture is lost.
And It's strange that so little of It was reconstructed.
