As soren5en said, the church survived. Not only that, but I always rather liked the way Münster was rebuild, in the context of the 1950s. This is, for instance, the same square now:

Yes, the houses are not faithful reconstructions but toned down modern versions. But they at least managed to keep the general style and 'feel' of the city which, again given the situation back then, to me is quite an achievement.

I think that out of every European Country, my favorite was that of 19th century Germany. So much of it reminds me of what I love about Victorian here in the US, minus the awkwardness of some American . Such a shame that so much was lost.:eek:hno:

Yeah, and they tore that last building down in - brace yourselves - 1967! It has survived the war damaged, but perfectly usable, even the tower was still usable. The Americans wanted to open a café up there after the war. It was used as municipal construction planning offices until 1967. Then Horten (a former shopping center company) bought the building and tore it down... incredible. This is what it was replaced with (to the left on the photo):

Sometimes, I just don't get people.... of course, Horten went down only a couple of years later, so Kaufhof took the building which now itself is being fusioned with Karstadt and will probably at least greatly reduce sales area. I just hope they tear that eyesore down now and am secretly dreaming of a partial reconstruction of the great Lloyd building ;)
