The Antena is almost two third of the actual building extremely tall, it could fall on someones head.

Already they are digging, so we need to be patient until something will show up above the ground level.

The Palace is only a symbol of Warsaw for those who do not get why it stands there.

Or those who simply do not care because it doesn't really matter today, anyway this off-topic is going for way too long... Varso should be a nice tower but it will not replace the Palace and I don't think that was the intention.

Controversy around the Palace was so hype in the 90's. I thought we all got over it, but obviously there are still people who have problems with their own history.

I came to this thread expecting much more backlash for that hideous spire being a really cheap height-record grab (and I'm positively surprised there is so little), but I see that we just can't have a talk without moving towards the political side of PoC&S (by which I'm negatively surprised).

Seriously? The first supertall thread for Warsaw and we must join the likes of Kingdom Tower and Ryugyong, constantly derailed by pointless arguments? If someone has a problem with the palace, the truth is there was time to blast it back in 1989. Then I wouldn't mind it. But if people didn't do it then there is no point now, plus it's even impossible.

As to the plot of land covering the tracks, with the parking lot. Is there still will to go with the tower over the station? This always seemed like science fiction to me. I would be sold on this concept if Japanese were to build in Tokyo, but it seems very unlikely that someone would actually have balls to do it in Warsaw.

And a final comment for Varso - I would LOVE for the previous 330m proposal on the plot of Holiday Inn to compliment it. That'd be awesome.

a small offtop :P
...from the article in skyrisecities....
Quote:
"At 310 metres, the 53-storey Foster + Partners-designed supertall Varso Tower is set to become Poland's tallest structure, (...)"
...to be precisely the article applies to the building, not the structure. Current tallest structure in Poland is RTCN mast in Mysłowice (358,70m).

The second one is in city of Olsztyn (356,m):RTCN Olsztyn Pieczewo (356,50m)...

...but we have to remember that till 1991 the tallest structure in the world was radio mast in Konstantynów-Gąbin/Warsaw (646,38m)

Neither I, nor many other Varsovians have any "problem with our own history". To state that the Palace of Culture and Science is not Warsaw's primary "symbol", but that the Royal Castle, Sigismund's Column and the Warsaw Mermaid are, is not necessarily tantamount to calling for demolishing the PCS.

Of course it will stay where it is, as a symbol of a time in Warsaw's history, when it was the capital of a satellite state of the USSR, with an imposed communist system of government. It does not reflect the historical and cultural spirit of Warsaw. It was completed in 1955, while Warsaw had embarked upon its path to prominence (first as the capital of Mazovia, then of all Poland) not in 1955, but some 500 years earlier.

In that sense, yes the PCS is a symbol, a symbol of 45 years of communism in Poland. It is also a spatial icon, due to its size, and the fact that a big chunk of Warsaw's city centre was completely cleared up of pre-war structures, to provide the PCS with an empty "adequate surrounding" designed for mass parades to honour communist rulers.

Hopefully though, its spatial domination has been gradually diminishing thanks to new skyscrapers in its vicinity, with the future Varso as the top one among them.

It will have 2 observation decks open for public + skybar. The top one's gonna have easily the best 360-degrees view:

That spire sucks. The tower itself is quite nice though.

Mister Aryanization is so competent when it comes to spires, when there is one he seems to heavily dislike it, and when there is none he constantly seeks one.

I love my GF. I told her Warsaw is getting a new tallest tower and asked her if we could visit that city again when it`s completed. And the answer was: Of course <3
