There is a large residential building there now and an office building as well, but it was still a huge waste of potential.

Another views of the vision tower by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill

And here is Helmut Jang's vision for the same site:

The Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill design is gorgeous! The other one is meh.

AS+GG excel at designing mega-towers. The boxy Central Park Tower in NYC is one of their few worthy of scoff. It should have been more like this concept

On the one hand, it's a little silly to be comparing renders of visions that'll never happen. But I'm honestly shocked by how ugly and seemingly half-assed that SmithGill tower is. Maybe Helmut Jahn is more invested because his proposal would mean saving his building from demolition, but he is out-Chicagoing a firm with deep Chicago ties.

Please make america great again by building this beauty to our country!
It will belong to all Americans.
I said that because,USA has a modern and futuristic building deficit compared to asian and arabic countries.
Go Thompson Center Redevelopment!

A "modern" or "futuristic" building provides, at best, marginal improvements to a city's overall well-being. Many times, they are actually detrimental. Those supposedly "futuristic" mega-towers in asia are little more than enormous, vertical suburbs. They emulate suburban urban planning concepts that are 50+ years old. They are horrible from a street-level perspective and they damage the overall urban fabric of cities. People who like tall buildings simply for the sake of them being tall are sadly ignorant. Especially when said buildings are built in an already highly-urbanized environment. Dont be one of those people.

They both are some of the most well respected firms in Chicago.

Right, I guess that was just a very roundabout way of saying: Jahn's proposal is about as contextually perfect as you'd expect, and I expected much more from SmithGill by comparison.

Chicago never ceases to amaze. Here's hoping this one, unlike the Chicago Spire, comes to fruition.

The AS+GG design reminds me allot of the Wuhan Center.

Wow, this is orgasmic. Hope either proposal get through. Or are we waiting on other designs? Exciting!

It would be so cool if Chicago would have a building of 500 m to the roof.

I know I am dating myself but the previous building that sat on the site of the State of Illinois building was the magnificent Sherman Hotel. The Sherman Hotel was considered to many "ground zero" of the big band and jazz era hotels. Famous people would stay there to see great bands like Woody Herman, Count Basey and others play at the College Inn which was in the hotel. Over the years the hotel fell into decline and was demolished for the current building. The State of Illinois Buidling has an interesting design but in my humble opinion is a very inefficient building in both tenant useage and energy. I would not be sad to see this Jahn designed building demolished. Maybe the new tower could house the "New Sherman Hotel"? Well I could dream I guess.
