Best modern airport in the U.S.

I know some airports are re-doing their terminals, but as of February 2017, who has the most modern up to date airports in the US?

I would offer Indy as a good example, however they are not a hub for any airline as of today.

Progress has been made at many other major airports, but nothing really stands out.

I do like Austin, TX's redo, but that is not exactly current. Miami has been rebuilding for years, but still is lost in the past on many concourses. Same with Chicago's O'Hare.

Detroit is very good. From very bad. Atlanta is huge, but already showing signs of age. DFW is a giant hub, but the terminals were not built for today's air travel. Houston tries to keep up with growth, but IMO is still a mish-mash of terminals.

Sea-Tac is growing, but slowly.

I really can't think of any US airport that is competing with airports around the world in major cities. This is a major problem.

Right now, none. In the future probably LaGuardia. All big US airports are designs of the 1970s or 1980s. It would take a reconstruction like the one they are doing in London Heathrow to modernize the big US airports.

There are some nice new terminals though in airports like LAX, DFW, JFK and a few smaller ones, but those are individual terminals. Airports like Chicago O'Hare and JFK would need a reconstruction like the new Terminal 2 in London Heathrow to catch up IMO.

Nothing out in the middle of nowhere. Any new airport will be a sprawl machine and generally a long distance from anything.

I prefer close-in airports that don't waste land and have quick rail access to the center of town. Design flair and functionality are obviously crucial too, but they don't dominate the topic in my opinion.

Maybe the perfect title is " best modern terminal or concourse"? Personally I like SFO's newest Terminal 3 and ATL's International Terminal, but if I need to choose so called best modern 'airport' personally I pick DTW

From what I've read, the new United Terminal at Houston IAH will be top notch when it opens in March.

A major multi-billion revamp of O'Hare (specifically terminal 2 but also terminals 1 and 3) are being planned as we speak. We should know by the end of the year hopefully what they will look.

It is likely that terminal 2 offer up a huge security and customs area for termianls 1/2/3 when done.

O'hare is wrapping up a long needed runway redo. The terminals are indeed another subject. I think this project will be very long-term, perhaps 20 years or more.
