Sneaking in a couple more Boston before I forget about them. You can see the tallest building hanging out in the background on the right side of the first photo. (it's the glassy JHT) 2nd tallest (Pru) isn't in any of these shots. Can't really see the 3rd tallest at all either. Lots of "pretty tall" buildings in this city. A bit more height is supposed to be on the way, hopefully with a couple towers starting up this year.

What strikes me about Chicago is how the buildings really give you a sense of place. There are so many big solid quality buildings; its not some non-descript swath of forgettable high rises like one sees in so many other cities. Sure there are mediocre or questionable skyscrapers, but you tend not to notice them as the eye travels to the show stoppers.

I love Chicago, it has such a well balanced skyline - probably the best in the world. Also, unlike many other cities, Chitown has quite the signature towers. Now if only they could manage to fire up the skyscraper construction machine again...

Chicago's big building boom occurred decades ago. The fundamentals don't look encouraging that there will be another one in the near future. The population grows slowly, office vacancy is relatively high, the economy is still in the doldrums, and the trend to downtown living isn't as strong here as in some other cities.

Things may pick up, but a building boom looks unlikely.

For real? Look how much has been built in the last 5 years. (link) You wouldn't consider the 2009/2010 additions to be a building boom?

I love the skyline of Philly!
New york is surely the most impressive, but as a whole i like Chicago the most. All the towers are brilliant and pure quality. New York is a little off balance with all the grey and brown. Chicago looks more colourfull and welcoming.

You can argue Chicago, Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, or some other city for second place.

Chicago and New York is a toss-up for first, and Toronto takes third. LA and Vancouver don't even come close.

There is a lot of debate over whether NYC or Chicago is better. There is actually intense competition; not sure how anyone could suggest there is none.

Maybe for the moment, yes. But once New York finishes all its 300m, 400m and 500m projects, there will be a gap between the two cities - maybe for the first time ever.

1WTC (500m+), 4WTC (~300m) and One57 (300m+) already gave the skyline a tremendous (height) boost. 432 PA (400m+) is U/C, with Hudson Yards North Tower (400m+) and 225W57thSt (~500m) to join the show this year. 3WTC (300m+) will resume construction soon, and 2WTC (400m+) - which is on hold right now - will eventually get going too. And don't forget the marvel per se: Tower Verre (300m+), expected to begin construction this year.

Chicago was ahead for about 10 years, when Lower Manhattan looked kind of "dull" and flat. Now the cards are turning. This decade belongs to NYC (if you exclude the Chinese and Indian cities).

Note: this is all my personal opinion, and not a fact.

New York's skyline is double the size for starters. Chicago has a dynamite skyline, but its not in the same ball park size wise. People who view scale as one of the primary indicators are not going to put Chicago and New York in the same grouping.

# of 100m+ buildings in Chicago: 283
# of 100m+ buildings in New York: 558
