NY City

Best lighting in North America, imo. Chicago a close second.

I think Toronto could give New York a run for its money when it comes to night time lights.

Toronto stands out because the CN tower and the Skydome add not only a bit of color but also they have interesting shapes. The curvature of the skydome and the needle-like shape of the CN tower are pretty unique. It's not just the crown of a skyscraper that is lit up.

That said, I would rank Toronto 3rd tied with San Francisco for nighttime lights in North America. I consider factors like size, color, balance, lights on bridges and other miscellaneous features, etc.

Dallas also has some interesting lighting but its relatively small size holds it back.

The 900 ft. Aura condo in Toronto was testing its crown lighting feature a few days ago and it looks spectacular. It'll really add a visual highpoint to the midpoint of the night time skyline when viewed from the East or West.

Here's a photo by Razz, showing off Aura's lighting feature. Looks great, IMO.

I'm only 1 block north and 3 blocks west of that building. I'm also on the 14th floor so I have an amazing view of that lighting feature.

Toronto's skyline is significantly smaller than Manhattan's, but I almost prefer it based on some of the things you alluded to. Building the CN Tower was the best decision the city ever made as far as construction goes. That coupled with the Skydome and a few other features makes for some spectacular vistas; especially at night.

4-10 is a tough call. There are so many good ones. It comes down to personal taste.

Toronto-wise, The CN Tower also has its boost with its LED lighting effect!

And with Houston, it does have a masculine skyline! Been there back in the mid 90s but stayed in League City.

After 30 years of relative stasis, downtown Houston is heating up again.

^ Great skyline, absolute argument for Top 5 in North America. However, the glut of downtown parking and lack of surrounding infill is still pretty atrocious for a major city!!!

It also really bothers me that they took down that old ~20 story building for the new 757' tower on the way. Houston should not be tearing ANYTHING down when there is so much space available.

By the way, I have a downtown density Boston thread on the way. Then you can see why I am overly opinionated in this area!

Are there professional or semi-professional photos of Boston you can find on Flickr?

I think San Francisco is often overlooked as a contender, particularly given its location which is stunning. The addition of the Transbay Towers will also help its 'peak'.

I agree with the peak comment. I think San Francisco's problem is that it's tallest building, while AWESOME, is also relatively underwhelming and at the bottom of a hill. From many angles (particularly at night) it just looks like a lit spire on top of another building in front of it.

This is one of those skylines that is about to take the next step in its evolution. I would say the others are NYC (height height height!), Philadelphia (new tallest, more bigs to fill out skyline), and Toronto (ongoing shock and awe), followed by Miami (overwhelming quantity) Boston (beginning its first round of steroids now), Montreal (buildup galore), and of course LA with it's new tallest (sort of) on the way. These are all going to look very different over the next few years!
