1. NYC (the density, incredible mix of towers)
2. Chicago (a lot of gaps in the skyline, however consists of a wide-array of supertalls)
3. Toronto (skyline is very coherent and dense, lacks a supertall (excluding the CN tower))
4. Seattle (beautiful setting and nice cluster of buildings)
5. Houston
6. LA
7. Vancouver
8. Calgary
9. Miami
10. Minneapolis

Yes, I don't think I can get such a central view of the ESB from another public observation deck.

Prior to the WTC, I think there was a scraper in Lower Manhattan that has an observation deck. From there you can see the ESB and the rest of Midtown's skyscrapers.

7WTC was open last fall for a few weeks with a free gallery and views of Midtown's skyscrapers. I was up there one weekend to take pictures :

That's what I like about Midtown's skyline. The ESB is right at the centre and its right infront.

hkskyline thats painting with a pretty broad brush there. North America is a pretty big place and density varies from city to city. I think the density of a city like Houston drops off pretty quickly but with a city like NYC definitely not.

I really like this pic its more zoomed out, the amount of buildings in this view is pretty mind boggling.

I wish it was higher resolution

Actually, New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Queens are not wall to wall skyscraper like midtown. The density drops significant across the river, although there are attempts now to increase the density. I find the difference on the Jersey side quite staggering, even with the new developments in Hoboken, Jersey City, etc.

Oh I wasnt talking about skyscraper density I guess thats where we're differing. I was thinking more like population and building density... The skyscrapers of midtown may end suddenly but your not gonna find many parking lots or single story buildings anywhere near midtown.

Compare New York to a city like Houston where there are parking lots littered through out the downtown

One of the reasons i find cities like Chicago and New York so amazing is the combination of street level density and high rises in the core. How many cities have attached high rises like this?

7th Ave

New York is number 1...i might possibly put Chicago at number 2 if someone demolishes that monstrosity called the John Hancock centre...

1. New York City: scale, height, density, variety. It's got it all.
2. Chicago: same qualities as NYC, but less iconic.
3. Toronto: very unique and visually interesting. Needs more scale.

The rest have alot of work to do to rival these 3.

EtherealMist: agreed! Density like you showed in that pic is great. I would add Toronto to your list though. Toronto's CBD looks like that pic with skyscrapers attached to one another and 600 foot towers built on the most ridiculously small floor plates.
